You might have crossed the temperature with the oil pressure possibly why it showed no oil pressure? If they are correctly positioned then it could be a clogged oil channel in the engine somewhere causing no pressure to be sensed?
It certainly could.
Also, at that age, the bearings and clearances could be getting slack so oil pressure would be expected to get lower.
If oil pressure is high when engine is cold, and low at idle when engine is hot, and high at higher RPM with hot engine, then it's more likely engine wear than bad oil pump.
Low oil pressure at high rpm with hot engine indicates failed oil pump. Best not to run when you have this condition.
The oil light indicates low oil PRESSURE, not oil VOLUME. BUT, I have had an oil pressure sending unit go bad on me before, indicating low oil pressure while in fact oil pressure was fine. If your oil fill cap (where oil is added to engine) is on a valve cover, remove cap while engine is running. If you get an oil mist or oil spray out of it, or if you can see oil spraying when looking down hole (use a flashlight), then you have oil pressure, and the oil light sending unit probably is bad and needs replacing.
I guess my first question is - how do you know the oil is too hot ? Engine oil is designed to handle several hundred degrees of heat, so unless the engine coolant is over 275 degrees the oil should be functioning correctly. If you have worn bearings you can loose oil pressure as the oil heats up because the oil gets thinner. And if the oil pressure drops below 5psi you could loose power to the fuel pump.
You'll want to remove the electrical oil pressure gauge and check the oil pressure with a manual gauge to verify low oil pressure. If the oil pressure tests good with a manual gauge, then you either have a faulty oil pressure sender, or gauge in the dash (I rarely see faulty gauges). If the pressure is still low, suspect worn crankshaft bearings. There is also a possiblity that the screen to the oil pump is clogged. This can be visually checked by removing the oil pan and cleaned.
code p 0846 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor B---range /performance problem====causes---wiring--poor connection--TFP---ECM---TCM
indicates a wiring connection or a pressure sensor failure
2 quarts seems excessive and low pressures can be form excessive oil which froths the oil
the correct level is on the hot oil mark in drive
Not really, when the oil is cold it is thicker so the pump is pushing the oil at a greater pressure.
When the oil gets hot, it is LESS thick than when it was cold, so naturally the pump does not have to work as hard to pump the hot oil and the pressure goes down.
You can go to the next thicker oil recomended by the manufacturer for your engine and you should see the oil pressure higher than before.
the oil pressure chime continues to go off when it is hot.
