Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1998 Chevrolet S10 4X4 Pickup Truck 5 speed

I need to change the key ignition cylinder on this truck. How do I do this - do I have to remove whole steering column - what is the best way to go? Help?

No it is actually pretty simple
1) Disconnect battery
2)Remove shroud (cover behind steering wheel)
3)insert key and turn to start position while holding it in start position there will be a small hole in top of where the ignition goes into the column an depress retainer pin and pull out igntion

1998 6.5....truck starts when i turn the key to run position instead of start position> i put in a new ignition key cylinder in and is still doing it


You need to replace the ignition switch. Not exactly sure where yours is, but it will be either directly across from the ignition lock or below the lock mounted on the column.

As long as the ignition key cylinder has never been changed, dealers will have records of factory key cuts going back some years. I think the cut off is 10 years but I could be wrong.

I have a chevy 1988 S 10 The keys are lost and I'd like to replace the ignition key cylinder. How do you remove the old cylinder & install a new one ?


take the sterring wheel off get this horse shoe looking tool to press the in plate take the snap ring off 4 screws holding the turn signal switch in then you will need a t15 or t20 pull that screw out which holds the ignition switch in

How do you replace the ignition key switch for a '96 chevy diesel 1 ton 4wd pickup truck?


Ignition Switch Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  2. Remove the wire harness from the retainers as needed.
  3. Slide the 2 connectors of the multifunction switch assembly out from the bulk head connector.
  4. Detach the key alarm connector from the lock assembly.
  5. Remove the ignition switch mounting screws and the ignition switch from the steering column.

To Install:
  1. Install the ignition switch on the lock module.
    • Tighten the screws to 42 lb in (4.7 Nm).
  2. Install the key alarm connector on the lock module.
  3. Slide the turn signal and multifunction switch connectors into the bulkhead connector.
  4. Install the harness in the original retainers.
  5. Install the steering column trim covers.

Ignition Lock Cylinder Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  2. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system.
  3. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  4. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the run position.
  5. Using an awl with a bent tip, insert the tip into the access hole of the ignition lock cylinder.
  6. Turn the lock cylinder to start and push down and hold the lock cylinder retaining pin.
  7. Release the lock cylinder to the run position and withdraw the cylinder from the steering column.

To Install:
  1. Align the slot in the steering column to the tab on the lock cylinder and install the lock cylinder until it locks in place.
  2. Install the steering column trim covers
  3. Connect the negative cable to the battery
  4. Check for correct operation

You need a lock plate removal tool,napa sells them ,they are cheap,and the pin in the key cylinder? Use a punch to destroy the pin.

I've had that happen with vehicals that have an automatic transmission. If youi do, make sure the vehical is in park. Hope this helps> good luck! Jeanebop

Spontanious misfiring on a chevy s-10 pickup 2.2 motor. The truck starts and runs but misfires on different cylinders and at different times.


go to auto zone get codes what year? distributor, tune up, bad ignition wires, vacum leak need more info

1998 K2500 ignition switch removal


Don't remove the lock cylinder! just break out the small plastic insert inside the upper panel where it slides over the lock cylinder and once its together you will be happy with the ease of installation and the ignition where the key goes in covers up the whole where that little bit of plastic once was
