It appears to be the expansion tank because that is constatntly low. It happened once before the replacements, thats why i had it replaced. then after the replacements it ran hot once and the mechanic put another thermostat in and said that the other one had probably gotten stuck. now it doesnt run hot, just leaks alot.

OK. I was trying to establish whether you definately have a coolant loss & it's not water dripping from somewhere else - i.e. condensation from the air conditioner.
The cooling system is designed to build up & maintain pressure, usually about 14psi & is controlled by the pressure cap. This pressurisation raises the boiling point of water to approx 115 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately this makes the system prone to leaks. You obviously need to establish where the leak is from & this is usually done by pressurising the system with a hand held pump, noting/confirming a pressure loss and then visually checking for the leak. It sounds obvious but make sure you're not overfilling the expansion tank as some room is required to allow for expansion of the water. The pressure cap should be checked to make sure it's not weak. If you haven't got access to a pressure tester it'll be a question of running the engine to operating temperature & searching for the leak with a torch (flashlight). If it only leaks when the engine is switched off then the most likely cause is the water pump.
Hope this helps.

Steve.

Are you losing water from the radiator or expansion tank and need to keep topping up? Did the fault occur before the radiator & thermostat were replaced or only since?

I have a 2000 Escalade and it's leaking a bit of antifreeze and I can't visually see where it's coming from but seems to be from the front end of the motor. It's not the radiator or any of the main v

I would take a look at the water pump. There is a weep hole on the water pump to indicate if the seals are going bad inside the water pump. This hole is located on the top of the water pump where the pulley mounts to it. If this is not the problem, then it could be a number of other problems.

I would check the following items, which I have listed in sequence of cost to repair.

1. check hoses and clamps, if leaking you should see areas that have build up of dried antifreeze.
2. check thermostat housing on top of intake where upper radiator hose connects to engine.
3. verify radiator is not leaking
4. intake gasket leaking
5. head gasket leaking

Check to see if the water is coming from the center of the front of the engine or if it is coming from one of the sides of the front of the engine. If it is from the side it is probably a busted hose and cheap and easy to fix. If it is coming from the center, locate the water pump and look at it from the underside there is a weep hole there and if it is leaking from that hole the water pump needs to be replaced.

From your description of symtoms it sounds like you have a bad water pump. If the coolant is not circulating properly you will have a heating problem. Sometimes even a new thermostat can stick and cause the engine to overheat. I have seen them fail in as little as a week after they were installed.
