Sure you can have the codes checked. but lets look at your coolant temp not raising that tells me your thermostat is stuck open . the thermostat wont cause the engine light to come on and it wont say replace the thermostat it will give you the problems of running a cold engine. (try the thermostat)

Where is the check engene light located

Most check engine lights are built in the instrument cluster with your water temp guage, fuel guage oil light or guage and all of the other warning lights. The check engine light will come on when you turn the key on and immediately go out unless there is a problem then the light will flash telling you a problem is detected and then stay on when the problem has to be corrected.Hope that helps and have a good night.

Coolant temp guage will not rise. heat blows cool.. when coolant guage does rise heat blows hot. doesnt always rise.what do i do or fix

Most likely, the engine thermostat is stuck open or missing. Changing the thermostat (or installing one) may solve your problem.

After driving for about 4-6 hours the temp rises

You should have your a/c system ck'd. Reason could be excessive system pressure and temp. This would explain the a/c safety turning off the a/c and the temp rise of the engine cooling system. Good Luck.

2003 audi a4 1.8t sedan temprature guage

You're talking about the coolant temperature right? If so, it's likely to be a coolant temp sensor. They're known to go bad on the A4, and they're only around $20-25 from www.ecstuning.com. If you replace it and the problem isn't fixed, no harm done - sooner or later that sensor WILL go bad. The result is that most likely your thermostat got stuck open and will need to be replaced.
