Problems with stalling and high idle

I have a 2002 GMC Envoy that has had several problems in the past three months. Ill be at a stop light and the RPM jumps up to 1200 then down to 400 then up to 1000 then down to 200 and then it finally stalls. I can be at a stop light and the car will **** forward which causes me to apply more pressure on the brake. Then I notice the RPM jumps up to 900 1200 as if the gas pedal is being pushed on. It continues to do this until I turn the ignition off. Sometimes when I coast in traffic and then press on the gas, the car hesitates for a second and sort of jerks forward.

It's been hard for my mechanic to diagnose the problem as the service engine light doesn't always come on. When it does, I take it to the shop and the mechanics fix the problems associated with the errors. I've had the throttle body cleaned, new air filter, new fuel filter along with a flush of the fuel lines, new spark plugs, as well as a tune-up.

After all this work, the car ran fine for a few days then all of a sudden the same problems have crept up again. The service engine light came on after the car was restarted due to a stall but then went out by the next morning. I'm tired of taking my car to the shop every week. What can be causing these problems?

I can go out start my Envoy up in the morning usually runs fine. I will stop somewhere on my way to my destination turn off when I go back to start I have to hold the gas pedal down all the way for it to finally start. When it does start it idles high and stalls also. The Envoy finally comes into where it runs just fine. I also feel it want to just fly down the road and I am not even pressing the gas and I have to apply more brake.

I have the same problem with the jerking and the stalling. It just started a few weeks ago and is very intermittent. After stopping the car and shutting down the engine the problem will usually go away but restarts shortly after. Im clueless as to what to do.

I had problems with the idle and with the car stalling and found that it was a failed oxygen sensor. I replaced it and the car runs great now.

2002 gmc envoy stalls when turning and slowing down

I am going to assume the check engine light is not on.
I would check the throttle body to see if it needs to be cleaned, and check the idle air control valve to see if it is working. The computer controls idle speed by the amount of air coming into the throttle body.
The ac problem is probably something different such as low freon or a cooling fan problem.

Sounds like you may have disconnected the battery. Does the rough idle only happen when the defroster or A/C is on? If so clean your throttle body with throttle body cleaner with the battery disconnected. When finished, drive it for 5 or so miles with the defroster / AC off to let the computer relearn the settings. This will solve your problem.

sounds like the throttle plate is stuck try cleaning is out do not push on the throttle plate will damage it. have some one sit in the vehicle with their foot on the pedal take a tooth brush and some carb cleaner clean both side of the plate and inside the housing the best you can and see if the stops it.

2004 Envoy xl stalls when making turns

this is caused by slow engine idle speed, do the procedure below.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Disassemble and clean the carb, particularly the jets. I suspect the charge light being on is a result of your destroyed battery, which needs to be replaced. Sta-bil over the winter and a smart trickle charger will prevent the problems you are having in the future...

Try the fuel filter. Sounds like the engine might be running rough due to weak fuel pressure. Its cheaper to replace, especially if it's still original from 04. Try running some injector cleaner through a couple of tanks of high octane gas.
