2002 24 valve cummins

On the front of the engine is a hose leading into a canister that is leaking and I don't know what it is. No one seems to know either. Help??? Mike

Just remove the catch cup and extend the hose to an out of the way location that won't oil up your rig.

On diesel engines, the front of the engine vents directly to atmosphere, and this hose with the "canister that is leaking" is actually a catch cup. The purpose of the cup is to catch the excess oil that comes off of the vent. Empty the cup and replace it. Alternatively, you could extend the hose down below the engine (you notice your engine and front end is oily and grimy? it's not that you have an oil leak, it is the overflow on the catch cup) and tie it off in a location that doesn't oil up the brakes or clutch. Careful though, if you are into 4x's and water, you want this system that vents the top of the engine to be as high as possible so as not to **** water into the top of the engine.

It is just a container to catch Xcess oil. You should always empty it when you have the oil changed.

Sounds like part of the emmisions control.When I put my K&N cold air induction on my 2001 v10 the instructions said to chunk it.

P0442 and P0456 are both evaporative emission error codes due to a small leak. The most common cause is a leaking gas cap or hose leak on that system. I did not list a code for your 0513. I am sending you a little information about your problem.. Best of Luck to you..

Check engine light is on with trouble codes P0442 and P0456. The codes are evaporative system small leak codes.
1. Verify that the gas cap is a factory Toyota gas cap and visually inspect that all hoses and lines are tight and connected.

2. Locate the canister closed solenoid and the vacuum switching valve on the canister. Manually ground them and verify that they operate and function. The canister closed solenoid is normally open and should close when grounded. The vacuum switching valve on the canister is normally closed and needs to open when grounded.

3. Verify that the hoses are not loose or pulled off the canister closed valve on the air cleaner housing. This has been a common problem on some models.

4. If no problem is found, the next step is to ground the canister closed solenoid and the vacuum switching valve under the vehicle and simulate an evaporative test and verify that the system holds a vacuum and functions normally. When the solenoids are grounded, back probe the Blue/Black (L/B) wire on the pressure sensor, and with no vacuum or pressure, the voltage should read around 3.3 volts. Start up the vehicle and turn on the purge vacuum switching valve and use engine vacuum to draw down the system to around 2 volts on the pressure sensor. If the voltage does not increase rapidly, there is no problem. If the voltage increases quickly, look for the leak in the evaporative system. Potential Causes: Canister Closed Valve

Hyundai santafe 2004 how to fix p0456...or what are ur suggestions for repair? i was advised to change the gas cap!


Here's the procedure:

Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV) Line Inspection
1. Ignition "OFF".
2. Disconnect the hose leading from the PCSV to the intake manifold at PCSV.
3. Using a vacuum pump, apply specified vacuum(Approx. 15 in, Hg) to the manifold side of the valve and verify PCSV holds vacuum.
4. Ignition "ON" & Engine "OFF".
5. Install scantool and select "EVAP PURGE VALVE" on the Actuation Test mode.
6. Activates "EVAP PURGE VALVE" by pressing "STRT(F1)" key.
7. Verify PCSV release vacuum while valve is activating(should hear a faint click from PCSV).
8. Repeat this procedure 4 or 5 times to ensure PCSV reliability.
9. Is PCSV working properly?
YES
? Go to "Canister Closing Valve(CCV) Line Inspection" procedure.
NO
? Verify arrow on PCSV is pointing towards intake manifold. If it is not, reverse installation. Reinstall as necessary.
? If OK, check for cracks or damage in hose connecting PCSV and intake manifold. Repair or replace as necessary.
? If OK, test with a new PCSV and check for proper operation. If problem is corrected, replace PCSV and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
Canister Closing Valve(CCV) Line Inspection
1. Return vehicle to original condition.
2. Ignition "OFF".
3. Disconnect the hose connecting Canister Closing Valve(CCV) to canister.
4. Blow air to the canister side of the valve and verify air escapes to the air filter side.
5. Turn ignition on and jumper a wire to GND(back probe) at terminal 2 of the ECM connector(CCV valve should click).
6. Blow air into hose and verify air does not escape.
7. Repeat this procedure 4 or 5 times to ensure CCV reliability.
8. Is CCV working properly?
YES
? Go to "Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Inspection" procedure.
NO
? Check for cracks or damage in hose connecting CCV and canister. Repair or replace as necessary.
? If OK, replace CCV. If CCV was stuck closed, inspect all lines and canister for liquid fuel. Replace any contaminated components and blow out lines and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Inspection
1. Start engine and install scan tool.
2. Monitor "FUEL TANK PRESSURE" parameter on the current data list with depressing increasing engine speed.
Specification : Signal value will vary between -2mmHg to 2 mmHg depending on variation in engine speed.
A. Approx. 0~2 mmHg(2.5V) at Ig. On
B. Approx. 0 mmHg at 1400rpm .
C. Approx. -2 mmHg at 4000rpm.

3. Is signal value within specification?
YES
? Go to "PCSV to Canister Line Inspection" procedure.
NO
? Check for cracks or damage in hose connecting canister and fuel pump. Repair or replace as necessary.
? Check for open or short in FTPS harness. Repair as necessary.
If OK, test with a new FTPS and check for proper operation. If problem is corrected, replace FTPS and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
PCSV to Canister Line Inspection
1. Check for leakage in hose.
(1) Disconnect the hose leading from the canister to the PCSV at canister.
(2) Using a vacuum pump, apply specified vacuum[Approx. 10cmHg(4 inHg)] to the manifold side of the valve and verify PCSV holds vacuum.
(3) Monitor vacuum pressure for 1 minute. After 1 minute, pressure should not drop more than 2cmHg(0.8 inHg).
(4) Is pressure within specification?
YES
? Go to "2. Check for leakage in canister" procedure.
NO
? Check for cracks or damage in hose connecting PCSV and canister. Repair or replace as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

2. Check for leakage in canister.


Thoroughly check all fuel vapor hoses and hose clamps between:
1. Canister and fuel tank.
2. Canister and CCV.
3. Canister and PCSV.

If NG, replace hose or clamps as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
If OK, go to next step as below.
(1) Disconnect hose clamps and remove canister assembly .
(2) Block the hose of between:
A. Canister and fuel filler neck.
B. Canister and CCV.
C. Canister and PCSV.

(3) Apply maximum of 10cmHg(4 inHg) pressure through fuel tank port from canister.
(4) With system sealed and pressurized, check for leaks.
(5) Were any leak(s) found?
YES
? Repair or replace leaking system component(s) and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
NO
? Go to "Fuel Tank Line Inspection" procedure.

Fuel Tank Line Inspection
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel tank.


Before removing the fuel tank, make sure the fuel hoses are not leaking.

2. Block all of the following outlets:
(1) Fuel lines.
(2) Fuel filler neck.

3. Apply maximum of 10cmHg(4 inHg) pressure to the EVAP. hose at the fuel tank. Then, pinch the EVAP. hose to retain the pressure.
4. Check the suspect area for leaks with a soap solution.
5. Were any leak(s) found?
YES
? Repair or replace leaking system component(s) and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.
NO
? Check for poor connection between ECM and component: backed out terminal, improper mating, broken locks or poor terminal to wire connection. Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

Fuel leaking from vapor canister on 1995 geo prizm. Changed out old canister, no leak for 150 miles, then started leaking again.


Hi, sounds like your system is not purging properly. Check the hose leading from the cannister to to the engine intake manifold. It should have vacuum on it when the engine is running. If there is a valve (I don't see one for your car), make sure it opens properly when the engine is up to operating temperature. Clean any valve as well as the hose if it is clogged. Check the vacuum source at the intake manifold for clogging as well. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using Fixya.

Where do i find the purge valve on a jeep grand cherokee 2001 i have engine codes p0445,p0443,p0442, gas mph seems to have dropped, muffler and tail pipe have turned white. What could be going on?


The purge valve is located under the hood on the drivers side fender, the most likely cause of your problem is a cracked emissions hose near the vapor canister. To access the leak detection pump and vapor canister remove drivers side rear wheel and inner splash shield. then remove the metal shield that protects the canister and check all of the hoses.

Code says evaporator purge solenoid


Which code specifically? Do not assume you need a new solenoid. Our recommendation will depend on the specific code and some troubleshooting results. I usually recommend checking over all the EVAP vacuum lines and the gas cap too whenever there is a purge valve code. Check the vacuum lines at the cannister in the left rear bumper. I will paste info on the purge solenoid below.

Evaporative Emission Purge Solenoid

Description & Operation
The duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid (DCP) regulates the rate of vapor flow from the EVAP canister to the intake manifold. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) operates the solenoid.
During the cold start warm-up period and the hot start time delay, the PCM does not energize the solenoid. When de-energized, no vapors are purged. The PCM de-energizes the solenoid during open loop operation.
The engine enters closed loop operation after it reaches a specified temperature and the time delay ends. During closed loop operation, the PCM cycles (energizes and de-energizes) the solenoid 5 or 10 times per second, depending upon operating conditions. The PCM varies the vapor flow rate by changing solenoid pulse width. Pulse width is the amount of time that the solenoid is energized. The PCM adjusts solenoid pulse width based on engine operating condition.
Removal & Installation
The duty cycle evaporative (EVAP) canister purge solenoid is located in the engine compartment near the brake master cylinder.

  1. Disconnect electrical connector at solenoid.
  2. Disconnect vacuum lines at solenoid.
  3. Lift solenoid slot from mounting bracket for Removal & Installation.

To Install:
  1. Position solenoid slot to mounting bracket.
  2. Connect vacuum lines to solenoid. Be sure vacuum lines are firmly connected and not leaking or damaged. If leaking, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set with certain emission packages.
  3. Connect electrical connector to solenoid.

Check engine light -- daewoo disgnostic trouble code p0442..what is it and is a major/minor problem --performed visual inspec. on fuel cap, evap hoses and canister..all ok..no sign of leak noticed when...


Okay no leaks so this means the vent valve is closing, how did you get valve to close? if there are no leaks and vent valve is closing and sealed when you smoke tested it then i would say to replace the purge valve, this is easy to change and not costly, just a dealer part or maybe you can find on the web, hope this helps.

Po446 evap vent code where is the evap vent located


Some might have an ses p0446, evap emissions vent circuit low. If you take it to the dealer they want 300-400.00 to fix the problem. GM has a service bulletin on this condition and have the updated part for 180.00, thats suppose to eliminate this issue.

Basically the problem is, the evap purge vent valve gets clogged with dirt, especially if the truck is used in dirty conditions. Well I figured there had to be a cheaper way to cure this problem.

Here it is:
1) find the location of the vent valve; its under the truck, locate the charcoal canister on the front of the gas tank and trace the vent line to the vent valve.
2) Take the bracket loose with a 5/8 wrench.
3) Spin the valve around so the side with the hole is facing you.
4) Take an air compressor and blow the vent valve out.
5) reinstall and clear the code and it's fixed.

Now I know the updated part from gm is supposed to keep the valve from clogging ever again, but why spend the money when all you have to do is blow out the vent valve every 50k-100kmi and save your $$$!

Condition
Some customers whose vehicles are operated in dusty type environments, such as farming or mining off-road type applications, may comment about the illumination of the instrument panel SES light, with a DTC of P0446 (Restricted/Blocked EVAP Vent Path) being set.

Cause
Dirt and dust intrusion into the EVAP canister vent hose assembly, resulting in restricted air flow, may cause this condition.

Removal & Installation
Purge Solenoid Valve-2.2L (L61) Engine
  1. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve harness connector.
  2. Disconnect the vacuum pipe from the EVAP canister purge valve.
  3. Disconnect the purge pipe from the EVAP canister purge valve.
  4. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve and bracket.
  5. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve from the purge bracket.
  6. Inspect for carbon release in the EVAP canister purge valve ports.
To install:
  1. Install the EVAP canister purge valve on to the purge bracket.
  2. Install the EVAP canister purge valve and bracket. Tighten the purge bracket nut to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  3. Connect the purge pipe to the EVAP canister purge valve.
  4. Connect the vacuum pipe to the EVAP canister purge valve.
  5. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve harness connector.
  6. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  7. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve harness connector.
  8. Disconnect the engine purge pipe from the EVAP canister purge valve.
  9. Disconnect the engine vacuum pipe from the EVAP canister purge valve.
  10. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve mounting bracket attaching bolt.
  11. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve along with the mounting bracket.
  12. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the bracket bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

Purge Solenoid Valve-2.4L Engines
  1. Remove the front purge pipe from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve.
  2. Remove the rear purge pipe from the EVAP canister purge valve.
    NOTE The EVAP canister may have released carbon particles, which caused this part to fail, and may cause damage to other components. Check the EVAP canister for loose carbon before returning the vehicle to service.
  3. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
  4. Insert a screwdriver between the EVAP canister purge valve and the mounting bracket in order to release the lock tab.
  5. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve mounting bracket attaching nut, if replacing the bracket.
  6. Remove the bracket.
To install:
  1. Install the mounting bracket and the attaching nut for the EVAP canister purge valve. Tighten the nut to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  2. Slide the EVAP canister purge valve onto the mounting bracket. Make sure the lock tab locks the valve in place.
  3. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
  4. Connect the rear purge pipe to the EVAP canister purge valve.
  5. Connect the front purge pipe to the EVAP canister purge valve.

Vent Solenoid Valve-2.2L & 2.4L Engines
  1. Raise the vehicle
  2. Loosen the EVAP canister vent valve hose clamp and slide the clamp down the hose away from the EVAP vent valve hose connection.
  3. Remove the hose from the EVAP canister vent valve.
  4. Remove the EVAP canister vent valve by placing a pry bar between the valve and mounting surface, and moving the valve forward.
  5. Remove the clip from the EVAP canister vent valve harness connector
  6. Disconnect the EVAP canister vent valve harness connector.
To install:
  1. Connect the EVAP canister vent valve harness connector
  2. Install the clip into the EVAP canister vent valve harness connector.
  3. Install the EVAP canister vent valve by pushing the mounts into the original holes.
  4. Lubricate the hose end with lubricant.
  5. Install the hose to the EVAP canister vent valve.
  6. Slide the EVAP canister vent valve hose clamp down on to the hose connection at the EVAP canister vent valve.
  7. Lower the vehicle.

Neon code 455 cant find a evap leak ( gross)


I have a 2002 Dodge Caravan which had a code 455. The following is a description of this van. The problem was caused by a 12 inch hose located under the van on the drivers side close to and in front of the liquid/vapor separator canisters. The 5/8 inch ID hose was connected between the front (engine side) of the LDP vent valve and the leak detection pump. Oil from the engine had leaked onto the end of hose connected to the pump. The plastic clamp was broken and the hose had swollen until it was very loose. Replacing the hose and clamps fixed the problem. The LDP vent valve is connected to the largest liquid/vapor canister by a 2 inch long hose. You may need to buy the hose from the Chrysler since it is a shaped hose. Any broken or missing clamps should be replaced with the band type sold by auto parts stores. Any other hose which is split should be replaced.
