Just want to know which gear is the right gear.

What gear is the right gear to drive in the one with the circle or the regular d?

The d with the circle around it is overdrive. the d without the circle is drive. overdrive is designed with highway use in mind. ideally, overdrive is for the highway and drive is for the city.... as far as i understand it.

There is a grinding noise from the front of the vehicle while driving. All new brakes. The wheel bearings have been checked and are fine.

Is it more like a vibration and humming, than grinding noise? If so it would be a bad engine or transmission mount. To check bearings while driving.. Find an empty parking lot, Make right and left turns/circles. Making a left, if the noise get loader, the right side bearing is bad. and vice versa. Do around 10 MPH while turning circles.

Where is the 4 wheel drive switch located on the transfer case I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

If it is a limited, it doesn't have a switch. They are full time 4 wheel drive. A regular Grand has the 4wheel shifter right beside the regular gear shifter.

My gears are P- park R- reverse D- drive (2 Drives one with a box or circle around it) what is each D for

  • D with no circle is just "Drive." this a lower geared drive and best used around time as it provides a better pick up and over all response.
  • OD is "Over Drive" and used for cruising speeds ove 50+ MPH down the highway. Over Drive allows the vehicle to cruise at a more sustained speed with less engine speed and provides better fuel consumption.
  • While you are in Drive going down the highway and your speed reaches 50 MPH just switch gears into Over Drive and you will notice your car "relax" a bit. Remember you don't want to switch from Over Drive to Drive until you get down to around 45MPH or it can be a little rough on your engine and transmission.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

I need to know what type of oil to use in the drive shaft yoke? for an Isuzu pickup 1995 with a 2.3 L FI engine.

You mean the rear end? 90 weight gear oil. Regular or Synthetic. Considering the year of the truck, regular will out last the truck. Most people never change gear oil. Hope this is what you are talking about.

For a 1991 lincoln town car are you supposed to put the drive lever in the position of the d with the circle around it or the large D. hope this makes sense

you will run it with the circle D,this is over drive for better gas mileage, and if your going down a hill or snow driving use just the D,this will help hold the car back

The 4wd light stays on. I have tried pushing the level up and down without success. I also having a problem starting the car (manual gear). I also have a problem while starting the jeep. It is not...

Light will not go out until the gears actually disengauge. Typically there is SOME preload on the gears and that keeps them engauged and light indicates so, correctly. To disengauge, move lever to disengauge and drive in left and right circles. This allows the front drive and rear drive to alter their relation in the transfer case, eventually allowing for release.

4x4 won't engage

I have to stop, engage 4H or 4L, and shift into nuetral and then the front gear box will then engage and you can hear it from nuetral and the engine at idle, it will slip into gear, if not, in gear go slow with 4x4 light "on" and while rolling slip into nuetral and then back into D, Some transfer cases will not engage in Overdrive, the D with a circle around it so shift into 3rd gear the one to the right of the D with a circle around it. 4 H has a speed limit, and do not shift into 4L while on pavement or you can do some damage.
