What damage can be caused to a vehicle engine overheats

Hi Anonymous,
It probably depends how far you drove after the car overheated. It is extremely bad news to drive an overheated car.
Typically the head gasket (between the cylinder head and the engine block) will warp when the coolant goes dry and the engine overheats. And then it leaks - both on the outside of the engine block and with big white smoke out the tailpipe.
Replacing the head gasket is doable but expensive.
But if you don't see any leaks on the block or white smoke you may have dodged a bullet.
Hope this helps,
Bud

White smoke blowing out the exhaust pipe

Sounds like a head gasket leak. Have a cooling system pressure test and cylinder leakdown test performed. In the meantime, you should NOT drive this vehicle or you'll cause more damage.

2001 s10 did not overheat but lost power, coasted to stop, white smoke from tailpipe and engine. What could this be?

The white smoke is probably steam caused by coolant getting into the cylinder(s) either from a faulty head gasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked engine block. The loss of heat from the heater indicated that coolant was being lost..

2000 grand am blowing white smoke from tailpipes

Check your coolant!!! White smoke is a sign of antifreeze getting in the combustion chamber. Very bad if it is. Don't drive it, get it checked.
(Pressure test the coolant system is the best way)

2004 Excursion 6.0 diesel blows intermitent white smoke

I don't drive a Ford but I drive an International and white smoke on start up means the engine is too cold to properly burn the fuel. Your black oil or soot is unburnt fuel. You should look at your engine's preheat system for a malfunction.

My truck blows white smoke

Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck
