Question about Dodge Ram 2500

1 Answer

I was told that having replacement starters for my dodge diesel truck was a result of inadequate electrical capacity from my optimas one red top & one blue top that are seeming to work great to me. The starters seemed to smell burnt and the truckes electrical has been checked over and tested. Any ides would be great as Im lost on this one and starters arent cheap for my diesel

because of the compression ratio of diesels.. you do need a good quality starter. be that as it may if the starter works that's fine... if you are going thru starters it's possible you have another issue with the electrical system or motor itself.... extremely hard starting is it ?

Diesel engines like yours are ultra high compression, so they are hell on starters huge amp load to spin engine, make sure the battery has the max cold cranking amps availiable, have your battery tested and verify it's cranking amp capacity,I would use the original equipment battery from Dodge, they are rated as one of best along with Delco from GM.

Follow the red lead on the battery, and keep following heavy red cables until you end up and the bottom rear of the engine.

99 dodge ram 3500 diesel starter will not shut off with key, turn off key and starter moter stays engaged and engine has run on. had to disconnect both batteries. gently tapped starter selenoid with hammer...

it sounds like the starter solenoid contacts are not separating to stop the starter from turning.the run on is due to the starter not stopping causing the motor to continue to spin.replace the starter unit as it will have damage due to being engaged with the motor running, also have the flywheel inspected to make sure the teeth are not damaged on it.

I have been told there is a switch wired to the clutch of my 94 2500 two wheel diesel. When it malfuntions it mimics a bad starter. Where is this switch?

Yes, there is a clutch pedal safety switch which prevents the vehicle from being started without the clutch pedal being depressed. However, this switch if faulty would result in a no start ( no starter or solenoid sounds at all). I would first check a few very important things first, Clean both the battery terminals and cables. Check for a good ground connection and a tight and clean starter connection. I would also inspect the starter cables for any hot spots or damaged insulation. If all those are fine then you could test the clutch switch with a test light or volt ohm meter to ensure its working correctly. In all the years working on these I have only seen on switch ever fail. Generally the problem lies in the cables or a faulty solenoid.

Every 20-30 starts my starter solenoid 20am fuse, 2000 dodge ram

You most likely have a internal short in the starter. You could pay to have a cranking test done or just replace the starter.

Starting problem in a '97 dodge ram diesel

Could be the solenoid on the starter. Next time it doesn't start, hit the starter with a hammer or other hard object, then try to start it. If it starts, replace the starter before it leaves you stranded

Trouble starting and blinking dash

I had exactly the same problem this morning after returning from the store. I replaced the OEM battery with an Optima Red Top Model 25. Problem gone. Chrysler OEM batteries rarely last more than three years. You don't need to buy an Optima, but they do last a long time.

Good luck....
