Question about Jeep Cherokee
The light comes on as the temperature gauge jumps toward the red, yet it does not overheat. The thermostat has been replaced twice; hot air comes through the vents and there is no apparent leaks anywhere. The radiator, the temperature sensor, the hoses, and the radiator cap have been replaced with new.
Check the colling fan to see if it kicks on at normal opperating temp 210'
it culd be air in the cooling system
if there is no leakes it could be a leaking haed gaskit

This is an ECU connector problem. The ECU is on the top left of your engine bay as you look from the front bumper. It has three connectors going into it. These connectors carry ALL the electrical info to the ECU, and they get corroded and lose contact in just two years. Jiggle them and it will get better for a day. My Jeep dealer did not listen to me and did not fix the problem (Crown Jeep, Dublin Ohio) until my car was out of warranty.

The light is triggered by the temp guage, it is telling you the engine is near to overheating, you will need to find out why the engine is running hotter than it should, enough to trigger the warning indicator.
