There are a couple of issues that can cause this, one is the trans electrical connector has come loose or there is a poor connection due to water intrusion, pull the connector and look carefully for and corroded connectors or any sort of damage, the second issue is one of dirt in the valve body, remove the valve body and clean it, check all internal connection to shift solenoids, then replace the filter and use synthetic fluid for the refill, this much improves trans performance and extends the life of the trans by as much as double.

Cheap fix is to buy a bottle of transmission fliud thickener. i cannot at the moment recall the brand that i used in my transmission. it apparently does not void your warrenty.

Works well tho i've gotten another 30,000 kilometers out of my van.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 auto idles good but will only move with it wide open or just barely any throttle

4.0L
what transmission, mines a 5 speed stick so?????
idles good, well that dont take much.
will only move, car moves?
with what wide open ,the throttle?
well just barely throttle is normal, why say that?

my guess is car has low power, or can not go fast in all gears.
is that it?
if yes, that is transmission slip or a weak engine,
transmission slip is easy RPM goes way high car dont move
weak engine acts like brakes stuck on , low RPM deep right foot.
post all symptoms and win, big time.

What kind of transmission fluid do I have to use

If this jeep is listed correctly, as a 1996 jeep Cherokee country then the correct transmission fluid would be Mercon or Dexron III . this is the correct fluid, Also if you remove the transmission dip stick and wipe it and look at the stick it will say dexron III. good day

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country 4.0L inline 6 4x4 Automatic Transmission that is slipping in 3rd and Overdrive, 1st & 2nd accelerate instantly with no problems. Any Suggestion?

Your transmission needs to be rebuilt. Likely the seals for those clutch packs have worn out causing a pressure drop and therefore not allowing full pressure to engage the clutch packs (then they slip). The longer you put it off, the more damage will be done. If you don't intend to keep it, you can try using Lucas conditioner. Most times that will restore seals somewhat and will extend useful life a bit. There is no "forever" chemical fix however so even if it works, the problem will not be gone for good.

Change you transmission fluid if it seems like the tranny is slipping. If not that, then maybe your MAP sensor is going bad, Are you getting a check engine light?
