SOURCE: No rear brake light / turn signals on 2001 Chevy Cavalier
The problem is the turn signal/headlight/hazard switch assembly on the steering column which the brake light wiring runs through. The part is easy to change and cost about $50 at most parts stores

you have a short somewhere. if it is the brake switch fuse it is probably the brake switch which should somwhere on the pedal arm or actuated by the pedal arm. also check your bulbs if you haven't already. hope this helps.

the most common cause of this is either a sticking 4 way flasher switch or the turn signal switch itself.
SOURCE: Brake lights wont work! All others do!
I just had the same problem on my '04 Silverado. All it was was corrosion in the socket/bulb. Put some dialectic grease on both the bulbs and worked them in and out a couple of times and now they work fine. Was weird that they both went out suddenly and together but I guess they are made exactly the same.

A little dificult solving this without actually being there..but you may want to check for trouble codes first. Also check the junction box in the engine compartment for corrosion. Remove it from its mounting and flip over so you can see under neath. Check for any corrosion in there.
