im not exactly sure on older fords but i know that 95 and newer fords had brake switchs that worked with the shifting so that if your brake light fuse/lights were blown it would not allow you to shift into any other gear

95 Saab 900S brake lights stopped working also have an issue getting the transmission out of park

Most likely the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal has failed
OR....
Your HAZARD / Tail fuse has blown.

Underneath the dash at the top of the brake pedal locate the brake light switch. Remove the connector / wires on the back of the switch and then jumper across the 2 pins to make the brake lights come on. Start the car with the brake on and try shifting the car out of park.

The car will not go out of park we think it has something to do with the linkage

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

There is a solenoid on the side of the shift linkage that locks the transmission in Park. It is activated by the brake light switch located on the top of the brake pedal. Check your brake lights for operation. If you have no brake lights first check the HAZARD fuse and then you can jumper the brake light switch terminals to see if you get brake lights. Once you have brake lights then attempt to shift the transmission out of park.

Also if there is a bonafide emergency and you need to use the car... look on the uppr corner of the console near the shifter. There will be a circular plastic plug on on side of the console just forward to the shifter. Remove the plastic button and insert a #2 phillips screwdriver to unlatch the shift lock. Once out of Park you should be able to remove the Phillips screwdriver. DO NOT operate the car in this manner for an extended period of time. Either fix the brake lights (if applicable) or have the shift lock solenoid replaced.

Kelly

I have a 2004 f150 and it will not shift out of park unless i pull up the council and push the bypass button... i replaced brake lights cause 2 were blown but the problem wont go away...

The color codes for the brake / shift interlock switch that trojan121cmo posted about :

Tan w/ Red stripe from Fuse #16 to Pink w/ Light green stripe wires

The brake lamp circuit is the other 2 wires, Light Green w/ Red stripe wire from Fuse #2 to Light green wire ( which feeds the CHMSL & the MFS for the rear tail lamps ).

If you pull the BPP ( Brake Pedal Position ) switch connector, you should be able to jumper the back with a paperclip to test it.

Don't know if the 97-03 MY work around still works ( not by my truck to check right now ), but this was turn the key to the accessory position, press and hold the brake, move the gear shift lever to neutral, then start the truck. This is when the shift interlock and the brake circuit were one in the same. Don't really know if it still works now that the shift interlock is on a separate circuit.

Auto transmissiom will not come outof park when

Brake light switch is not working. Electric brake controller is activating the shift lock. It's either the switch or the brake light fuse.

Brake switch fuse keeps blowing

replace your brake pressure switch on the master cylinder and that should take care of your problem.

Will not shift out of park

If the trans won't go out of part then the part lock-out is engaged, this is disengaged when the brake lights are activated, make sure the brake lights work, if they don't check the brake light switch (and the fuse) with a 12 volt test light to see if it works, until they work u are stuck.
