Question about 2005 Nissan Sentra

Car has trouble starting/turning over

I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra which runs perfectly except for 1 issue. Every so often when I go to start the car, the engine will not turn over and it take 2-3 attempts for it to finally start. It always starts eventually by the 3rd try with no turnover probelms. On the 1st or 2nd attempt, it repeatedly turns over and sometimes on the 2nd attempt it held long enough, it will start.

What is weird about this problem is the fact that it does not occur on a regular basis. Sometimes it occurs 1X a day, sometimes 2X a day, sometimes never. It usually happens when the car is started after having sat for a short (>1hr <4hr) period of time. In other words, when I get up in the morning and go to work (after it sat for 8-10 hours overnight), it never happens. And when I leave work in the afternoon (again after having sat for 8-10 hours), rarely happens. It's usually after going somewhere and then leaving after 30 mins or 1 hour when I go to start it that I notice it.

I have added a video of it here (sorry, the sound isn't that loud).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvV3T8pDLTQ

Also, I took it to my local mechanic who I go to frequently, but he could not identify the problem because he could not get it to occur (since it is somewhat random).

any help is greatly appreciated.

i have the exact same problem with my 05 sentra, down to the letter. i'm gonna check the mass air sensor in the intake and the exahust gas sensor. good luck.

I have had this problem for a year and a half now, and I have taken it in twice to Nissan dealerships, and each time they say they don't know what the problem is because they need to "recreate" the issue and they never had a problem either time starting the engine. I am afraid one day that I am going to get in the car and it is not going to crank and then I will get really pissed off at both dealership service centers for not taking care of this problem for me.

I also have the same problem with my 2005 Sentra very hard to start after already being started for the day. I would really like to know what it is as

I don't want to burn up the starter.

i have the same problem, i have checked all of my coils, they are all firing my spark plugs, my spark plugs are new, my spark plugs are also wet meaning they are getting fuel so my fuel pump is working.

I have the exact same problem. It has been since i bought the car and only sporatically. Nobody can figure this out for me either!!!!

  • elguy Oct 15, 2008

Same exact thing here. I was about to replace the spark plugs to trouble shoot the issue until I read this posting. Anyone try the fuel pump suggestion?

  • iqminustwo Jan 29, 2009

I have had the exact same problem for about an year with my 2005 sentra special edition.

I've always suspected a problem with the battery.  I replaced the dinky small battery with a heavy duty one that could actually hold a charge, and I have experienced fewer starting problems, however, it still happens.

I have the exact same problem with my 05 Sentra. I bought the car brand new and it has always done this. While it was under warranty I took it back to Nissan and they replaced the fuel pump in an attempt to fix the problem but it never did. My car always starts but sometimes I have to turn it over several times.

I have the same problem...thought it was just my car

I have a 1997 Sentra that has the same problem as you have discribed. For some reason engine get flooded and it will not start until you keep trying or change you wet spark plugs. This has been a huge problem with Nissan engins.

Wow...I'm glad to see I'm not the only one this happens to! Just like the post, it happens randomly to me. I also have an '05 Sentra. Trying to find a solution on the Internet, without having to shell out a ton of money first. My brother had an '04 Sentra, and I believe it did the same thing.

Everyone who decided to try and say what the solution is is wrong for on a fuel pump would cause the car to run like **** at all times and the starter?? if your car is turning over then the starter is working....the problem is actually being caused by the crankshaft positioning sensor check the codes

There was a recall on the the starters on 05 sentra's something to do with not letting enough air in or somthing, I had the same problem at about 40,000 miles, it was an easy fix, take it to a dealer.....just wait til you head gasket goes at 90,000 now thats a headache

You need to find out what the error code is - Service engine soon means an error code was generated.

With the problem you discribed, it sounds like a coil problem. If a crack has developed in the casing, the crack size changes with temperature changes. Also make sure that the wires are in good shape.

I have Nissan Exalta2000, it would power off all of a sudden while driving, the 4 icons on the dashborad lit up and if I stop tha car wont start. it happens 3 times and if I get a mechanic they cannot...

hello there, had to do some looking up as to what NISSAN EXALTA 2000 actualy is. i reside in USA and we do not have exalta on our streets. here, its a powertrain aka engine and transmission in a NISSAN SENTRA so it should be very similar to our sentra as far as setups except for different body. I think that you have an issue with the CRANK ANGLE SENSOR. i would start with replacing the sensor. is the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light on??? if so, that could be for many reasons and one of them would be crank angle sensor issue. nissan had problem with those sensors. they would cause the car to die. nissan had campaign / free replacement program in those model years of nissan sentra 2000 year model. have the crank sensor replaced. start there. like i said very common problem.

Can I use Mobil 1 sunthetic oil for the engine of 2005 1.8SE Nissan Sentra?

Sure, the only issue is oil comsumption. If you put the oil in and start to consume too much oil, consider HIGH MILEAGE Blend. These oils are both synthetic and regular oil. Casteroil and others make this oil.

2005 nissan sentra 1.8 liter wont start cold ...

These vehicles had issues with fuel pressure bleeding down when they sit for a period of time (like overnight). Nissan has issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this issue.

There is a check valve in the fuel pump assembly that holds fuel in the fuel line so that fuel is readily available to the engine. This valve fails and allows that fuel to slowly drain back to the tank. The reason you have to crank the engine for a long period of time is that the fuel has to be pumped from the tank all the way to the engine- may take 10 seconds or more.

Once you start the vehicle, fuel is available and since the drain back to the tank is slow, restarting after even a few hours will be much easier.

The repair involves replacing the fuel pump "module" assembly (it's a service kit that contains the check valve mentioned earlier). The fuel pump assembly is removed from the tank and disassembled and reassembled with several new parts. This is a dealer-only repair. Depending on your level of expertise, you may be able to perform the repair yourself, but will have to buy the parts from the dealer.
