Battery and brake light keep coming on - 1996 Nissan Maxima

I have the same problem. My husband is active duty military and we were moved from Hawaii to South Carolina. My 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE was shipped overseas and when we picked it up at the Vehicle Processing Center my battery light and brake light were on. I figured it was because the car wasn't started for a month. I began to drive the car and the lights would go off; however, a month later my car won't start at all. My windshield wipers work, my stereo etc but my car doesn't start all I hear is a ton of clicking when I try to turn the ignition on. Anyone know what that means?

I had this same problem last month! I checked my battery connectors and got rid of some corrosion on them, and the lights turned off. I thought that was the end of it until a week later they came on again and my car ultimately died. Turned out the alternator was gone and I had to put a new one in. No problems now!

Just a note, I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra. After the alternator was replaced, it took a few miles for the electric transmission to remember it's parameters - at first, I was flooring it and it would rev to 5k rpm but only go 25mph. By the end of a few miles, it was fine and shifting as normal.

Check your battery cables for being secure and you canas I told someone else, on similar problem...unhook the cable and let the car stay unhooked from battery for aprox.15 this is a manuel reset for older acuras that works, sometimes it could be bad relay sending flase signals to dash, when there really is no smoke or fire, to be running from.

The battery light is signaling the failure of the alternator.  If the brake light that is lighting is for the ABS, the service voltage may be falling far enough to affect the ABS operation. (I once had the ABS LOCK my brakes because of an alternator failure.) If the brake light is the one related to the handbrake, then the two may not be related or the switch that detects whether the handbrake is released or not, may be failing.

Battery and brake light constantly comes on

Battery light comes ON,this is indication of battery not getting charged by the alternator in the car.So the battery is loosing its charge/voltage.Other possibility of battery light coming on is battery is getting weak and it needs to be replaced. In some cases, just removing and cleaning the battery terminals and then reconnecting the battery terminals again.solves the problem. But also check the battery voltage by voltmeter.A fully charge proper battery will give 12 volts. If there is then get the battery terminals cleaned and reconnect and check.-------------- Now another problem, the brake light comes on when, the brake fluid is near to end or there is any problem with brake system, that is if brake pads are getting worn out or brake caliper is getting loose,In this case first check the brake fluid,if that is fine then check the brake pads and caliper. If that is also checked fine, then only in that case.Check the brake light switch. The switch is located where the brake lever is.Remove that brake switch, clean its wiring and recheck. It should help.-------------- Thanks.Helpmech.

Battery light means the alternator is not charging so if you keep driving it eventually the battery will die. The brake light may be on if the emergency brake lever is pulled even a little bit.

You don't have a short, just a bad alternator. Both lights will come on, on nissan's when the alternator is bad. I have been a nissan and infiniti tech for 11 years and that's just how the lights operate.
