Question about 1997 Dodge Stratus

1 Answer

1997 Dodge Stratus, unknown roar

I have a 1997 Stratus and the car starts to make a "roar" sound at 25mph. From time to time the "roar" is not that loud, but it is there. As I increase speed the roar become louder. I thought it was the tires but I went over a newly resurfaced bridge the tires made a distinct sound and the roar did not change. I have tried to shift the car into neutral while at 40mph to see if the roar is still there and it is. I cannot tell if the noise is coming from the back or the front. Any idea where I should start looking?

It has gotten a little louder and I dropped the back seat to determine if the sound is coming from the back or front, and it is at the back. I will look at the wheel bearings.

yep, that was the problem. I took off the wheel and brake drum and as I turned I could feel the vibration. replaced the bearing and now OK. Thanks for the help.

Try replacing the front end wheel baring(s) If it is a roar that you can hear resonating from the windows, this is most likely it.

When it's cold outside i can put my 1997 dodge stratus in gear but it will not go anywhere but when it warm outside it gives me no problems.

Sounds like it might be time for a transmission rebuild.many of the transmission clutches ,drums etc are worn.I suggest you take the vehicle to an ASE Certified Transmission Shop and have them test it .

When we are driving out 2004 dodge Stratus everything sounds good until we turn. When we turn we hear a grinding noise coming from the front of the car. What could be causing this?

More then likely its a CV joint, but most of the time it would be a clicking you'd hear. Do you hear a roaring sound when driving in a straight line? Its possible then it could be a wheel bearing and when turning the sound is more pronounced.

the clicking noise is from the starter solenoid. It is not receiving enough power to move the starter drive gear to the flywheel. If the battery was charged fully the solenoid will engage the drive gear to the flywheel to start

I have a 2001 Dodge stratus RT and whenever it starts it makes this loud roaring sound and almost sounds like its popping in the engine. It lasts about 30 seconds. Well today it continued even as I was...

My professional advice is that you need to:
1. check the engine Oil
2. Tow,... not drive the car to the shop.

You may have lost engine oil pressure, this will lead to engine failure. If your car has been making this sound for a while you may have already damaged the engine. This is the best i can tell with the information provided.
