Get an assistant. Have someone turn the key in an attempt to start the car. While they do this, position yourself underneath the car with a hammer. Whilst starting the car, hit the starter (not hard enough to dent it) with the hammer. If it starts, the starter was 'frozen' and should be replaced. If nothing happens, try taking the starter off and bringing it to a local parts store (autozone, pepboys, etc) and having it tested.

Correction: Attempting to start the vehicle before you are ready to hit the starter is not recommended. Wait until you are in position. Sorry for any confusion. Also, if the starter does not work after hitting it, and it makes absolutely no noise when you try to start the vehicle (not even a 'click'), then the problem may lie in the 'starter solenoid' , so do make sure to have the starter tested.

Battery is good but when I turn it on it just clicks won't start, maybe after 20 times it starts

Without hearing the sound it makes - it's kind of hard to diagnose.

The engine starting process consists of turning the key to start, the starter motor's rotor moving forward to engage the engine's flywheel, and then the starter motor 's "rotor" spinning until you move the key from "start" to "run". You can hear the starter motor spinning - but one usually can't hear the rotor moving forward to engage the flywheel. As a result, you hear the odd spinning sound - which is the starter rotor spinning. The engine never actually turns over because the rotor never engages the fly wheel. If this is the case, then it is very likely that your starter needs to be checked and / or replaced.

Good luck!

The first step is to narrow down the cause of the no-start.

Let's go over the process of starting the car, so you have a better understanding of what is going on when you turn the key:

Here is what happens on a properly running car:

  • You sit behind the wheel and insert the ignition key into the switch.

  • You then turn the key to the spring loaded start position. When you do that, the ignition switch engages the starter by connecting the battery to the electric starter motor which, in turn cranks the engine over. This can be easily heard and is referred to as cranking the engine over.

  • The next thing you will hear is the engine running, which is your signal to release the key.

  • At that point, the engine is running and you are ready to place the transmission selector in Drive and be on your way.

My car will not start battery good starter good. I have been told it was security and i donot know the code or how to set it

take your security key to the dealer with the car, and ask them to reprogram your key to your computer, if it wasn't a primary key.

Did this for a Ford Expedition (1999) that we got and had 2 new keys made for it.

I would also try to toggle the key on and off several tims to see if this helps to turn over the engine.

This I have to do on a 1997 Cadillac Deville, occasionally, on a starter that is starting to go bad.

MOTOR OPERTAES WITHOUT KEY

your starter, solenoid or ignition is no good. but my first choice,i think your solenoid is shorted because when you hook up the battery,it cranks but does not start.that means your ignition switch is still working.

My 03 impala wont start up ..wen i turn the key jus clickin noise

if the clicking is repeated with out you releasing the key then the battry is in need of charging or replacing, if its a one click each time then the starter motor is faulty.

Nate, I'm not sure what you mean when you say,"I can get it to whine but not turn over. The starter is trying to get it to turn, but I don't think it is getting any gas".

Separate and aprt from not getting any gas is the fact( if I understande you correctly) that the motor is not being cranked by the starter motor. You say "it whines". You are referring to the starter motor, right? the starter motor should not "whine". If this is what's happening by guess is the Bendix spring in the starter motor is broken. The bendix spring is a heavy spring that is mounter on s worm gear in the starter motor. When you go to start the motor by turning the key the starter motor turn and the spring travels down this worm gear and engages tthe geared flywheel and cranks the engine. As soon as the engine starts the flywheel is now turning the bendix spring faster that the starter motor and the spring kicks back to its original position. If the spring is broken it never engages the flywheel and the engine wont crank.
The fact that you say the starter "whines" is what I would expect you to hear if the starter is at fault.

As far as no fuel flow there are 2 ifs: if you have an electric fuel pump, then there is a problem in the fuel flow. If you do not have a electric pump then the fuel pump runs off of the engines motion and since the engine is not cranking, the pump is not pumping and the fuel is not flowing.

Anything else you can add before we conclude that the starter has to come off?

95 F150 wont crank

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.
