Question about 1997 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

97 taurus flunked DEQ

From code P0340 (camshaft positioning sensor circuit malfunction), and P0430 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold/bank2)

so, can anyone translate above language to english?? I mean the car still runs and all, but I would really like to repair and get it DEQ'd .. and yes, I want to do the repair on my own. no better time to learn...

The cam sensor is located to the back of the engine (meaning to the right end of the engine where the transmission is bolted to it) P0340 most commonly is the sensor and what they call the syncronizer you will have to replace them both but be aware that this code can be caused by a wiring concern or a pcm concern,to replace the cam sensor/syncro you will need to make sure the engine is timed properly othewise the code will come right back, they make a timing tool that really should be used when doing this but I have done them in the past with out it and never had a problem. As for the p0430 it means your catalytic converter has went bad and will also need replaced as I recall there are 3 cats on this car p0430 means bank 2 which is the one on the front of the car but I reccommend to replace them all at once because as soon as you get the one replaced the others will start acting up.One other thing do not let someone sell you sensors for them as this will not fix the concern.

Definition of Diagnostic Trouble Code P0430 Category: Powertrain Definition: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2Note: This definition of P0430 is applied to all manufacturers

As the code description implies the P0430 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0430 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

What can i do to fix p0420 & p0430 code.. 2005 ford expedition 5.4 ,,,, can you please tell me where is located p0010 code, A camshaft position actuator circuit/open bank 1... Same truck .. Thank you

p0420 and p0430 both indicate a clogged catalytic converter. the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. The p0010 indicates camshaft sensor. The camshaft sensor may be the main problem, as it will affect your timing and fuel/air ratio, which in turn can effect what your Oxygen sensors detect, throwing the p0420 and p0430.

Make sure your car is timed correctly by the timing chain/belt, reset light, then if it dont' solve the problem, change oxygen sensors, if those don't help, catalytic converter is clogged.

I changed out the MAP sensor, and the idle air sensor on my 2006 Ford Taurus. This was before I had the fault code read at a dealer. Code came back as P0340, and P0430 Band 2 cat worn out. I had the cam...

P0340 FORD - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1Possible causes- Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor
- Camshaft Position Sensor harness is open or shorted
- Camshaft Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty starter motor
- Starting system circuit
- Dead (Weak) battery
P0340 FORD Description The Camshaft Position Sensor is an electronic device used in an engine to record the rate at which the camshaft is spinning. This information is used by the Engine Control Module(ECM) to control ignition and fuel injection. The camshaft position sensor senses the retraction of camshaft (intake) to identify a particular cylinder. The camshaft position sensor senses the piston position. The sensor system consists of a rotating part, typically a disc, as well as a static part, the actual sensor.

When the engine is running, the high and low parts of the teeth cause the gap with the sensor to change. The changing gap causes the magnetic field near the sensor to change. The change in the magnetic field cause the voltage from the sensor to change.

When the crankshaft position sensor (POS) system becomes inoperative, the camshaft position sensor provides various controls of engine parts instead, utilizing timing of cylinder identification signals.
P0430, main catalyst is worn out.

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency below Limit - Bank No 2" How would I fix that without taking it in? P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
you need a scan tool to monitor the upstream and downstream 02 sensors on bank 2 more than likely its the converter. also check for exhaust leaks before converter . Most times the problem is the Downstream O2 sensor2_bing.gif is defective.
