Question about 1992 Plymouth Laser

2 Answers

Transmission problem my 92 laser has a trans problem that I was told is probably the computer. reverse works fine but when you shift into drive it starts out in second gear and won't go into first. I tried unplugging the computer and 1st gear did work but won't shift it out.please tell me how much would it cost to get it repaired.

Where is the TCM and ECU located on my 1992 Plymouth Laser? How hard is it to swap them? I already had my tranny looked at, problem is the tranny guy I took it to doesn't do computer work on cars.

The transmission control module in reality is the ECM for these cars, 1990-1994 Eclipse, Talon and Laser. The transmission inputs and outputs are a portion of the ECM, along with all the engine management inputs and outputs. Mitsubishi tech manual has this information. There is no separate TCM from the ECM it is incorporated into one box.

I realize that I jumped the gun on my last comment. The TCM is located under a cover that splits in two behind the instrument panel. The TCM is bolted directly to the floor next to the firewall.

It is not a main computer problem but the transmission control module. the engine speed sensor sends a signal to the main computer(ECM) which then in turn sends the signal to the trans mission control module. the cost of this can be pretty steep if you go to a dealership, however if you go to a local parts place like Napa the cost will be half. one last thing to check is to have a diagnostic scan tool hooked up this will tell you what codes are showing and i'm sure there are some. ythey will clear the codes for you. also if a solenoid inside the trans mission is the problem and sometimes they are because of gummed up fluid they can replace it for even less.. hope this helps...please rate this thanks

My 92 Lexus LS400 recently lost all forward gears but reverse works just fine.

You can only perform certain tasks yourself on a transmission. In this case it sounds like you need to visit a transmission shop. On occasion cleaning the oil and filter, making sure the trans is upto the correct level on fluid, may resolve an issue. If it does not then you probably need professional assistance.

You shoould visit a good independent rather than a lexus specialist as they will almost certainly charge an arm and leg for labor

GOOD LUCK

92 dodge ram 150 not shifting

Two things happen on the Dodge's. 1. the rear O2 sensor shorts out and meses things up. 2. the Inner seal on the Direct drum (3rd) shrinks and causes a delayed up shift.

Put the transmission in the drive position and while driving the transmission will not take 3rd or 4th gear. no leaks. reverse works. someone told me the it may be the selonoid?

There should be a 3-4 shift solenoid inside the trans pan. Remove pan and look for solenoid with the wiring part out of position. Common issue on GM trans.

The transmission shifts fine in drive, but when going through the geers, Park works, Reverse acts like park, Neutral acts like drive, Drive works, 2nd and 1st work. Any Ideas?

Hi Ken:
Sounds as if the linkage is out of adjustment. Did something specific happen to cause this to start to occur? If you look at the linkage, there will be some point where you can shorten or lengthen the rod that attaches to a lever on the transmission. One way will make it better, the other will make it worse.

92 geo metro with automatic transmission will not go out of 1st gear sometimes

my guess is its not electric shifted, (what trans model is it)
so step 2 in the FSM book says.... and i paraphrase
step1 is stall test (my guess passes in 1st and reverse)
step 2, line pressure test?
if that fails, tranny is bad.

Transmission shift control solenoid

This is caused by old transmission fluid that becomes a suspension of transmission metal shavings and the hydraulic fluid (or transmission fluid) you can try flushing the tranmission bt it will probably take a few times and be really expensive ( s oyu will need to change bout 2 gallons of fluid each time its changed. or have it cleaned out by a rebuild specialist*.

* who will tel you something other then what I just told you because it is less profitable to rebuild a trans rather then selling you a remanufactured transmission.*

95 ARORA shitfs hard into reverse ans drive but shifts fine while drivivg.i was told prob a solenoid in trans.how do i fix?

The most common issue with these cars is a sensor that is located inside the transmission that gets splashed with transmission oil and prevents it from working. The car reports a code PO717... which is the "Input Turbine Speed Sensor" is not reporting. This will cause the transmission to shift roughly out of park and reverse. The transmission will need to be disassembled to have the sensor replaced. You can still drive the car but it will eventually cause the transmission to fail completely.

Car shifts hard (up & down), especially shifting to reverse.

that delayed reaction may be the transmission slipping. with those many miles it could be the transmission going bad

98 Ford Explorer wont move in reverse or overdrive

Probably low oil pressure in the transmission or worn clutches.
