My 92 pickup about 6 to 8 months ago when I would take off from a stop or gear down to first gear and resume driving a unexpected sputtering would occur to best describe the feeling as if your teaching someone how to drive a stick and they don't quite release the clutch and the gas right so you get that jerking feeling, the first time it happened I figured I had put bad gas in it the second time thinking I had run it too low on fuel but I am using better gas and with a low fuel or full of fuel it happens with no warning. But the only association I have is when I am coming out of first or second neutral but never when I am in 3rd and up.I had a friend run a tester on it and it came up as the ignition igniter but having checked the local parts stores and seeing the cost for one I have decided to get your opinion before spending 365.00 for this part. If it is this part is this something I could get at a pick-a-part and put on without causing problems? Thanks for your help Stutter 'n tttoyootttaaa.
I would not change the igniter. It either works fine or it does not work at all. Lets take a look at the basics first: What condition are the wires in? Are they reasonably new? How about the spark plugs? Are they Toyota plugs, from a Toyota parts dept? Aftermarket plugs do NOT run well in a 22RE, no matter what the auto parts store tells you. Then, look at the tube from the air flow meter to the intake manifold. Is it cracked? An air leak here will def cause you problems. Pop the air intake hose off of the throttle body, look at the butterfly in the throttle body; is it dirty? Clean it with carb cleaner until it is nice & shiny. Let me know.
