2002 vw TDI automatic transmission...Delay in shifting into reverse. When it does engage it cause quite a jolt...Fluid change seemed to solve problem for 6 months.. I have seen lots of reports of similar problem...fixes range from a switch or valve body to complete transmission replacement. Any Recommendations?

SOURCE: transmission fluid check on a vw jetta tdi

Never ever bring a jetta to a volkwagen dealer. They will bend you over and rape you.

All you have to do is remove the top plug with a hex wrench.

SOURCE: 2000 vw Jetta TDI transmission fluid change

The dealer is correct. It is a sealed system, there are no drain plugs/bolts for the transmission fluid. The only way to remove the old fluid is to go to a VW dealer and let them use a special "vacuum" type machine that will **** out the old and put in new fluid. However, if you are not having issues with the transmission than there is no need to replace the fluid because it is supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle on this VW.

usually a sign that that gear set is starting to go out or has already, standard transmissions CAN be rebuilt, but it's usually easier to have a used working one put in place instead. good luck to you. does it pop out of gear?

My VW bora 2002 model automatic transmission is failing to engage to 4th gear. 1 2 and 3 engages perfectly can you please help me what i should check or should I change the whole transmission

no country told
no engine told
no vin told
these facts lets helper now the exact transmission there. which I go GENERIC answering now.
fails hot and cold engine.???
PRNDL , R and L work ok?
no BORA here at all USA.
all our cars here 2002 are electronically shifted
and the tests on car are mostly the same
as other poster said fluid levels but also not smells burnt or looks like tar.
A/t box filter not clogged. if is may work hot trans.
all fuses checked good as in ALL
no tranny leaks end to end.
engine has full power, Low and REVERSE? not told
drive never hits, 4th gear, so that can be simple.
WE next scan the PCM(tcm) and see if there are solenoid, or pressure sensor or pressure control valve errors.
if all that pans out (means good)
we then do the transmission pump pressure port tests.
in all gears PRNDL , per service manual (a tool)

also some cars this old , not here.
still had TV cables (throttle body to tranny cable)]
that if rusty, stuck or frayed they can stick out and
4th gear can not be reached because the tranny thinks the driver is wanting passing gear. 3rd.!!!

on newer boxes the TV cable is gone forever.
and TCM computes load and throttle demand purely by electronics. so if sensor lie so must box fail.

I answer for doing tests not guessing
but no transmission told. or country
some of these cars use ZF box.

My Polo 1.4 automatic gearbox doesn't shift gears while driving

Sorry for that. There quite many things that could lead to Gear shifting problem. Let me hope your vehicle is Automatic transmission system. I would like to know the last time you serviced the your car, did the technician change the transmission fluid or not? If the transmission fluid has not been changed for a longtime, you need to consider changing that transmission fluid and observe the behavior of you car after that and ensure that the level is appropriate.

The reverse wouldn't engage on my friends 2002 vw jetta 2.0 someone else replaced the master and slave. when you first turn on the car it whistles and when trying to shift it grinds. I took the slave

Could be a bad throw out bearing causing the whistle, and perhaps the other issue as well. Reverse is hardest gear to engage smoothly as it is not synchronized. Try re-bleeding the system and insure none of the linkage parts are worn. Also make sure the trans is correctly filled with fluid.

20001 vw jetta tdi automatic transmission problem

Ok , so you got home , parked it and when you started it up the next day and shifted it into reverse... backed out... and went to shift into drive , it stayed in reverse ?
Have you checked to see that the cable has not disjoined itself from the shifter to the trans.?
Are you able to engage Park?

I changed the gear box of my 2007 corolla about 5 months ago. Then I noticed the car jerks or kind of pushes forward whenever i change my gear from park/neutral to drive or reverse. Please what do you...

A delay of more than a second in shifting from the neutral to drive or reverse gear, could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. If on changing from a neutral or park position to the drive or reverse gear, the car does not immediately catch the gear and move forward or backward, then it could mean a problem in the transmission. If you change gears, and you hear a sudden clunk or sudden jolt or shudder, then the shifting is not smooth and there could be a problem with the gearbox. If the engine rpm keeps increasing but there is no increase in the speed, then it could be a sign of the transmission slipping. Most automatic transmission systems, nowadays, have a check engine light or an OD light, which flashes if there is a problem with the engine.

How to check transmission fluid level

Most 1995-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for checking the transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the side or bottom (location depends on model and if you have an automatic vs. manual transmission) of the transmission drain pan. The factory manual refers the expensive VAG 1924 special tool for pumping the VW automatic transmission fluid into the oil pan.

What does it mean when an automatic transmission slips gears?

hello. Here are some of the transmission slipping signs you should be looking for:
  • A delay of more than a second in shifting from the neutral to drive or reverse gear, could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. If on changing from a neutral or park position to the drive or reverse gear, the car does not immediately catch the gear and move forward or backward, then it could mean a problem in the transmission.
  • If you change gears, and you hear a sudden clunk or sudden jolt or shudder, then the shifting is not smooth and there could be a problem with the gearbox.
  • If the engine rpm keeps increasing but there is no increase in the speed, then it could be a sign of the transmission slipping.
  • Another one of the transmission slipping signs is oil or automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leakage. This could damage the transmission.
  • If your car has suddenly started sounding noisy, then it could also be because of a problem in the gearbox.
  • Most automatic transmission systems, nowadays, have a check engine light or an OD light, which flashes if there is a problem with the engine. You will need a code reader to diagnose the problem by reading the code.

It's an automatic and today it wasn't shifting like normal.

First, and easiest, is to check your transmission fluid level and make sure there is the right level of fluid as seen on the dipstick.

Low levels of automatic transmission fluid will cause erratic shifting.

2000 Mustang trans. problems. VSS, NSS, trans control solenoid?

If your engine is getting hot, check your radiator for transmission fluid; the radiator has a small heat exchanger that cools the transmission fluid it is located inside the radiator bottom; the transmission lines attach there; also, the leak into the radiator of transmission fluid can "starve" the transmission causing delay in shifting, slipping and, more throttle being needed to engage and, shift.
