Question about 2001 GMC Savana

1 Answer

Air bag disabling

We have written permission from transport Canada to disable the passenger air bag in a 2001 GMC Savana. We transport a young child in the van, and need to disable the air bag in some way for safety reasons.

The dealership refused to help us.

If we had a wiring diagram for the passenger air bag, I was told that a mechanic would fix this for us.

I am very concerned for my daughters safety, but we have to use the van.

Can you please help me find the information I need?

Thank you

Lorraine

Well the problem is that there is no "behind" the front seats. Directly behind is a metal barrier, to keep the tools etc from flying forward.

We applied because there is a warning not to put kids in the front seat due to possible death from air bags.

I wasnt suggesting disengaging them permanently, just to have a switch like most trucks have to turn them on or off, depending on whether there are kids in the passenger seat.

Hi Lorraine,

I think it would be far safer for your daughter, to have a seat, even a fold up, that could lock into it's position, when in use, fitted into the rear behind the front seats....I'd also suggest that it is fitted with full harness safety belt....

I don't have a diagram and even if I had one, I would not give it to you.... I cannot understand why anyone would give a letter of authority, to disengage such an important safety device....It is something which may save her life.....

Do you never see the possibility, of carrying anyone else in the vehicle?

I'm sorry if I seem harsh.....I am with the traffic department where I live, and I have attended accidents.....one yesterday....

I don't know the reasons why you have applied for that exemption....All that I can say to you, is leave the air bags working and make sure you drive so that you'll never need the safety that the air bag provides....

I'm sorry if my reaction has upset you, but I wish your daughter and you, all the very best....

  • Hi Lorraine,

Now that I understand the problem, maybe I can help.... There are kiddie seats, which fit onto the passenger sea,t with the child facing backwards.....

If you find one of those, make sure that you daughter's head and neck are protected by the back of the seat... These particular seats, are designed to fit so that they fit backwards onto the passenger seat....They are also designed, so that in the event of the air bag inflating, the seat will not be forced backwards, as the frame will support the child's seat in that fixed position.....

As for the air bag, it is triggered with electrical signals.... A competent auto electrician, will be able to fit in a relay switch, which will be operated by the attachment of the kiddie seat, via the seat belt warning light switching devise, to interrupt the seat belt activation device...

I would suggest to the person that you employ to do the job, that he or she, should fit a relay, which is activated by the seat belt....A different size belt should be fitted for the kiddie seat....This will automatically engage or disengage the air bag unit, depending on who is sitting in the passenger seat .....ie; your daughter and her seat belt will not work on the adult passenger buckle and therefore the air bag will be disengaged

Best regards and say hi to your daughter from me

How do i remove a 2005 dodge durango air bag

HI Nick.

Please do not do this, there is pyrotechnics involved which can be extremely dangerous if triggered while you are working on it.

If you want to disable it for the safety of a child that will ride in that seat, look for the child safety switch to disable the airbag.

Keep in mind that even qualified mechanics are not allowed to work on airbag systems because it is dangerous.

Safety first please!

How to disable passenger airbag in 2013 gmc yukon

Look in your owners manual

Maybe you can't, unless you can find it in the manual

Usually the occupied seat sensor, adjusts the passenger
air bag, based on weight

May have to ask at the dealer service dept & have the doctors
letter, to do anything about it

How I don't know,short of unplugging the air bag & installing a
test adapter, which is to work on the vehicles systems, not legal
to leave in the system

How do I disable the passenger side airbag on a 2011 Chevy Impala?

Generally speaking, you don't. Only trucks give you the option of turning off the passenger side airbag in the event you are hauling a child car seat.
You could unplug the air bag, but then the entire system would be disabled.

Right airbag disabled when someone sits in seat and alarm sounds

There is a sensor in the seat that is supposed to disable the air bag if a child is sitting in the seat. The weight of an adult should activate the air bag. There is something wrong with the sensor. DO NOT LET A CHILD SIT IN THE SEAT UNTIL IT IS FIXED. If the air bag deploys with a child in the seat, it could be fatal.

Disable the passenger air bag

the passenger airbag is disabled automatically, the system is called the "smart Airbag system" anytime there is less than 50 pounds in the pass seat (like a child) the air bag is turned off by the control module, there is no manual override switch like the older systems have.

1999 f150 airbag light stays on after blinking upon start up!

Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Switch
The passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) switch:
  • is located on the instrument panel to the right of the climate controls.
  • contains a light emitting diode (LED) that indicates when the PAD switch is activated (passenger air bag disabled).
  • allows the passenger air bag deployment circuit to be disabled using the ignition key.
  • should be used whenever a child safety seat is being used in the front passenger seating position.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prove Out the System
Prove out the system means to turn the ignition switch from the OFF to the RUN position and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately six seconds and then turn off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault is present, the air bag indicator will either:
  • fail to light.
  • remain lit continuously.
  • flash.
The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the RUN position. This is the time required for the restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and an SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of five sets of five tone bursts. If this occurs, the air bag indicator will need to be repaired before diagnosis can continue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Active Commands
This command allows the technician to verify operation of the air bag indicator, passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) lamp and chime. When the air bag output command is executed, the indicator, the PAD lamp, chime and the chime are activated simultaneously for approximately four seconds. All devices are deactivated automatically.
