Question about 1999 Buick Riviera

1999 Buick Riveira that won't start sometimes.

1999 Buick Riviera that won't start sometimes. Problem seems to occur when the SECURITY light stays on. When it does this, it won't start. I wait a few minutes, and it will start. If the SECURITY light is flashing there are no problems. The service book says to take it to the dealer. Is there a cheaper way to solve the problem?

Buick dealer replaced the lock cylinder at a cost of $250 for the part and 2 new keys, then $210 for labor...This has solved the problem. Thanks for the advice.

I have a 1997 Buick Riviera. I love it very much, but sometimes it wont start. The security light will come on after I try and start it and then I will have to wait 5 minutes before it goes off and I can try again. I took it to a mechanic today and they said it has to do with the key/lock/ignition switch. They are keeping it overnight to my dismay, but hopefully it can be fixed and hopefully it does not run me broke!!

My 1996 Buick Riviera has a Traction, security light, seat belt light that stays on all the time and the Temp gage will register the correct temp then drop out as does the gear position indicator and then...

gear position indicator will start blinking a code(?) You may think it's blinking a code , but it's not . Doesn't have the capability to do that . Traction, security light on - take it and have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes checked . Sounds like you have insturment cluster problem , Without testing anything that would be a guess . Take it to a qualifieed repair shop an have it diagnosed .

Very common, annoying, and possibly expensive problem with all GM vehicles. Go to this link for an explanation of the security antitheft problem, along with some ways to fix it yourself for cheaper.

1996 Buick RIVIERA security light stays on but car functions properly for now

The security system (VATS/PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars/years. When the TDM starts failing, it will do it gradually and the car will begin to randomly don't start and then get worse with time up to a point that it won't start anymore. It's been a nightmare for us. You can find a great write-up here: , it was the only thing that saved my 94 Park Avenue that has the same security system.

The blowing of my 95 buick riveira quit

Check the heater blower fuses first. If you have an owner's manual, it will tell you where they are... Might be a bad switch. Try the easy stuff first before you ripp into the dash panel...Good Luck

Headlight is out on passenger side of 1998 buick riviera. It will sometimes blink when I hit it. The whole assembly seems loose. The side light cornering lamp works. The wiring all looks secure.

Yep sounds like you need a new headlight bulb The flashing is the tungsten fillament inside of the bulb breifly contacting the broken halves together when hitting it..Replace the bulb and all should be good. Note some times the light may stay on ,, this is because the broken halves arc welt themselves and break again upon cooling after you turn lights off ...good luck

1995 Buick Riviera SC: traction and the security light

traction switch is located next to drivers left knee on bottom of should be able to turn off the traction light there by just turning on the traction control.....the security light is telling you that there is a problem with your security system....could just need a new key with a new computer chip....make sure the key is clean and dry when using so it can read the chip....the security light comes on whenever your start the car and stays on for approximatley 2 minutes and then should go is just a reminder....try this and see if it works....lock the door using the power switch on door.....close door and see if the security light comes and it should go out after about 2 minutes...if it does then your alarm is activated and disarm you need to unlock the driver door with the key...anything else will set the alarm off and the lights will start flashing and the horn honking...after you set the alarm off you will always have to use the key to unlock the drivers door to turn off the alarm and reset the security system.

Hard to start and won't stay running

Put fuel in it,then check the fuel pressure with a gauge. The tank unit maybe giving a false reading.
