Turn signals will not turn on unless the brights are on and lever is held in place
I just bought this car and it runs great but the turn signals will only turn on if I flip the switch in place and then pull it toward me until it "connects" which is also turning on the brights. I also have to hold it in place or they stop blinking. This is very strange. I would like to try and fix it myself, but not sure where to start.

Turn the parking light and compare the brightness on all lights. Next turn the flasher and compare the brightness on all light. Some time light bulb like 1157 will be insert the wrong way and short the light to signal. second open the light socket remove the bulb and inspect for burn mark and rust(replace the socket.
Behind the carpet is the ground point, clean and tight the ground.
and last is the combination switch for light and signals.
There should be a turn signal flasher and a hazard flasher. They are two different parts. If you replaced the hazard flasher and not the turn signal flasher than I would start by replacing the turn signal flasher.
One thing you can do once you find the turn signal flasher is to unplug it and use a jumper wire between the two pins of the connector then turn the key to the run position and place the turn signal lever in the left or right position. If the turn signal lights know light up than the turn signal flasher is the problem
You most likely have an intermittent stalk mounted switch on your steering column. The same turn signal lever lets you flash your brights, also can make your lights flicker and act up if its bad, so It would be a good place to start looking for the problem.
sounds like the turn signal lever is shorting out especially if you have tilt wheel the wires bend and break causing it to short out within the harness and the brake headlights all run through the lever itself diagnosing the issue is with a test light and removing the lower panel of the steering column to locate the wire it may take a long time to figure out which is which as there are a great many wires Ive replaced 4 in the last few months recently which in the long run was faster and easier.opposed to well ii had to remove and test every wire ....have you installed anything recently ? as it may also point to a short /crossed wire nut i believe you will find this is your issue
