Not that hard to do really depends on the location. First thing you ALWAYS WANT TO DO IS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY SO YOU DON'T TOUCH A HOT WIRE TO GROUND, AND CAUSE A SHORT OR A FIRE. Then remove any heat sheild and wiring from the starter, taking note how exactly to put it back on, then remove the starter bolts (remembering which bolt goes where)(some have 2 different lengths, some don't) holding the starter in place. then back it out, and if you have to wiggle it in different ways to get it out of the space, you just have to work with that in different positions. Some starters are easily removed as in a straight shot to pull it out, and out away from the engine/transmission area. then to reinstall it, make sure the teeth on the starter are facing the right way...towards the flywheel inside the hole, hold the starter in place with one hand and with the other hand, place one starter bolt in correct hole and turn it by hand to make sure you don't cross thread it in cocked so it won't strip out later when you tighten it, then do the next bolt, once both are hand tightend and you are sure they aren't cross threaded the wrong way, tighten one then the other using a wrench or socket, then go back and just hand snug them in place for the last insurance, then hook up the heat shield if it has one along with the electrical wires in the correct place snug tight by hand with a wrench or socket. hook up your battery you disconnected correctly then start the car. If you don't think this is enough to help you, get a chilton's manual for your car or take it to a shop to get the work done.

How do I replace the solenoid on the starter?? we need step by step instructions. thank you

You remove the starter

Then replace the solenoid and
reinstall the starter

Not a real difficult job,if you need
instructions I would suggest you
jack up the car, support it,look over the
task first

If you have very little in the way of tools,
no metric tools, you will want an experienced
car guy there to show you how

Wont start sometimes could be starter

if it doesn't crank, maybe a dead spot on starter commutator. Next time it happens, try smacking the starter with a hammer. If this works, replace the starter.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6222268-engine_doesnt_crank_turn_over . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

I need instructions on how to put a new starter 97 jetta GLX

You may want to check some things out before actually replacing the starter.

Check the fuse in the fuse box and the relay.

There are two parts to the starter. One is the actual starter motor and the other in the starter solenoid. The solenoid moves the starter motor into place and engages it into the engine.

When you turn the key you should hear the solenoid click as it moves the starter. If you hear the click and the sound of the stater motor spinning it is just the solenoid. It can be replaced without replacing the starter motor.

If you hear the click and no sound of the starter motor trying to turn. It is the starter motor.

It check for power at the motor. Use a test light or voltage meter to see it is getting power when the key is turned.

If you are getting power you have a problem with the starter motor as you suspect already. The above may save you money.

To change the motor it is fairly simple to do. You remove the four bolts holding the motor in place, remove the electrical connections. Slide the motor out. Installation is the reverse of removal.

I am assuming you know where the starter is. On a diesel it is on the back of the engine. On a gas engine it is on the front side.

If you really want to get into it you can replace the brushes on the starter motor. Once out you open the starter and install new brushes it they appear warn and are not making contact.

If you need details I would go to the library and ask for the Bentley service manual. They will have one or can get one from another branch.

Hope this helps.

Starter replacement

no manual will have instructions. Most inportant thing is to disconnect the battery first. Then find it and take it out if you have the tools. 2 or three about 14 or 15mm bolts hold the starter to the motor and 1 or2 wires that make it work need to come off. You may have to jack up the car and access it from underneath

Need to replace starter need info on how to do it.

chb725: If you go to mybunkey solutions and see the heading " "Starter, battery and alternator ok", you will find that I have given instructions for the removal and installation of a starter for a 1995 Nissan Maxima, in great detail.
The instructions include the tools needed, proceedures in a sequence more detailed (which you will not find in any book) and precautions to be taken during the removal and installation of the starter.
I hope this will provide the answer you are looking for. If not, I will await a more detailed request from you.
