1998 Cadillac deville headlamp on/off problem

1998 Cadillac deville. When the headlamp switch/knob is off and message "headlamps suggested" come on then headlights come on automatically (daytime running lights), but the side or tail lights are off. However, when I turn on the switch/knob then all lights (side and tail) work but headlamps do not come on, neither high or low beams.. I checked the fuse for the headlamps but it was OK. What could be the problem? What could it be?

if its just the one you probably need to replace it by getting to the back of the light to get to the globe, there will be a cover you can remove to do it,if you sometimes slap the light on the lens the globe may come back on indicating a loose filament ....will still need changing though

No the dimmer switch doesn't change high/low beams just interior lights. Did you try changing the bulbs?

Good Luck,

Check the headlamp relay in the under hood fuse / relay box . The location should be shown on the inside of the lid. Also check HIGH / LOW HEADLAMP relay in the same under hood relay / fuse box .
The headlamps are controlled by the body control module (PZM). The battery positive voltage (B+) is applied at all times through the HDLPS fuse at the switch side of the headlamp relay via CKT 340 (ORN).
Battery positive voltage (B+) is also applied at all times through the RADIO/PHONE fuse to the coil side of the high/low beam headlight relay via CKT 40 (ORN/BLK). Both relays are controlled by the PZM at separate output cavities.
Do you know what a relay is ?

Can I program the automatic headlights to always shut off when the ignition is shut off - day or night?

I have a 1997 cadillac deville that has both 'daytime running lamps' when put into gear and 'twilight sentinel' which turns the headlamps and parking lamps on at night, and goes off during the day or when it is bright enough.

There is an adjustable delay for the twilight sentinel to turn the headlights off after the ignition key is removed and it is night time.
    ---
I had the 'daytime running lamps' installed on a 1990 Cadillac Deville that turns the headlamps only on when the ignition key is switched to on with an aftermarket module. The headlamps are about 70% or so as bright as the regular twiilight sentinel headlamps and parking lights and are designed to go on during the day.

The twilight sentinel overrides this feature when it gets dark outside.

I had the daytime running lamps installed by an auto electric shop that specializes in electrical systems, alarms, stereos, etc.

    Does this help?
