Starter do you have to remove any part of the exhaust sytem to remove the starter on a 1998 sonata V6

Having had this problem (a couple of times on our 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6) my first guess is, its probably the starter. So although there are other possibilities, I would be surprised if it's not. The first time I replaced it with a used starter from a salvage store. That turned out to be a mistake because I had to replace that one within a year. Replacing the starter isn't too hard, depending on your mechanical skill level. The quick sequence is; disconnect the battery. Remove electrical connections from starter. Remove mounting bolts (3 I think). Maneuver the starter down and out (this is a little tricky). If you choose to do this and need more detailed info let me know. I would also suggest you get one that carries a limited lifetime warranty because our Sonata may actually be on its fourth starter (I'd have to look at the records). Good luck.

Access to the starter is from under the vehicle.... probaly on the back towards firewall and must be over exhaust (looking up from under it) and attached to transmission. REMEMBER: disconnect battery negative post cable 1st! If you want to be certain it is starter first either while it's still connected to battery, go under and check if you have constant 12v on main terminal and switch terminal should have 12v ONLY when key is "cranking"... hold key long enough to test for current. If all is as should be, continue to remove starter after disconnecting battery. Bench check both old (to be sure its bad) and new (so you don't install a defective one).

first you disconnect the negative cable on the battery. then jack it up use something to keep it from coming down on you. starter is located under the engine on the passenger side next to the transmission under the exhaust manifold might be easier to remove the right front tire. three bolts hold it on, one small wire and one large cable.

The starter is located below the exhaust manifold on the LH side of the engine (side facing the radiator). It is held in place by two 14mm bolts on the transmission side. Be sure to disconnect the battery before you attempt to remove the starter.

1. Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
3. If you can reach them, disconnect the battery cable and solenoid connector from the starter motor solenoid. On some engines the terminals are difficult to reach while the starter is installed; it's actually easier to unbolt the starter, pull it out to point where you can reach and disconnect the cables.
4. Remove the starter motor bolts and detach the starter from the engine. Having socket swivels and extensions, along with angled wrenches, will make this job easier. Depending upon the year and engine type, the starter may be mounted above the transmission or below the intake manifold. On some models it may be necessary to remove the exhaust system to make room for the starter assembly to pass between the engine and chassis. Make sure the engine and exhaust system are cool before starting. I found that once you get the cables off, you have a better chance to remove the starter motor without removing the exhaust system. If you have to mess with the exhaust system, just loosen enough to allow clearance.
5. Install in the reverse order. If it was necessary to remove the starter to disconnect the cables, remember to maneuver the replacement starter in place, ensuring that you have the necessary access/clearance through the exhaust system, and reconnect the cables prior to bolting the starter in place.
6. Be patient. With the right tools and a little luck this shouldn't take more than an hour once you have the vehicle on jack stands and the engine has cool. It

Bear in mind that the starter solenoid usually fails long before the starter motor itself and is a much cheaper repair.
Starter is on the LH rear of the engine.
NB!! : Whenever you work on the starter first remove the battery negative cable.
On V6 engines remove the LH exhaust downpipe(1).
Remove heatshield(3), 2 electrical connections and then the 2 bolts that hold the starter to the transmission.
On 4 cylinder engines it is possible to remove the starter by just removing the 2 electrical connections and then unbolting the 2 bolts holding the starter to the transmission. In this case an assistant is nescasary to help with holding the nut in the engine bay while you unbolt from the bottom of the vehicle.

STARTER LOCATION ON 4.0 V6 -REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER.REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD COVER FROM EXHAUST MANIFOLD RIGHT BANK TO GAIN ACCESS TO STARTER COVER BOLTS.THEN REMOVE STARTER COVER BOLTS AND REMOVE STARTER COVER.**** 5.6 V8 ENGINE YOU HAVE TO REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD TO GET TO THE STARTER.

SOUNDS LIKE A EXHAUST HEAT SHIELD IT SHOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE

Answer Use a large wrench to take tension off of your serpentine belt and remove the belt from the alternator, (just the alternator). Disconnect the wires. Remove the bolts then the alternator. Put new alternator in place using old bolts. Replace wires (may only be one wire, depending on the alternator). Get your large wrench back out, put the belt back on the alternator, and your good to go. this should do it.
