    keemo68,

    Thanks for your advice. Turns out a snap-ring or whatever holds the starter-gear shaft in place was missing. Maybe staying engaged caused this? Was covered by warranty since was only one year old.

Engine start Bendix still engaged put into any gear Bendix disengages can go back to park there will be no more problem

if your saying your starter stays engaged after starting engine till you cycle thru the gears , your starter needs serviced , most likely a worn bendix pivot bushing

two options 4 repair
1= replace starter
2= remove starter and have it professionally rebuilt then reinstall it

What couse the STARTER TO STAY ENGAGED

You don't say whether the starter is continuously cranking the engine or just spinning continuously or whether after starting the engine the starter switches off but remains engaged? Lack of detail makes it difficult to give anything but a general answer.

Certainly the starter should be removed and checked for damage and correct operation. The pinion might be tight on the helix, the solenoid could be tight, the return spring broken or the arm pivot seized. If the starter has been engaged while the engine has run at speed or for more than a few minutes the overrun clutch should be replaced.

In any case where the starter has remained engaged the ignition/starter switch and the drive mechanism in the steering column lock should be inspected for correct operation.

its one of two faults a starter fault or a switch fault,,
test the switch by hooking a wire to the small terminil on the starter and hooking a 12 volt light bulb up to it,,,now turn the key,,this bulb will light up,,,only for the time the key is held in the start up poshion if it stayes light up when you have let go the key the key switch if faulty

My car wants to keep starting even after turning the key off

solenoid may be sticking. Have someone start the car, if it sticks tap the solenoid with screw driver handle. If that stops the starter, replace the solenoid. If it were me, I wouldn't bother testing it and just replace solenoid.

F 150 starts and starter stays engaged unplug alternator starts ok but no charge

2 problems, first you have bad starter or starter relay for starter staying engaged, keep alt plugged in has nothing to do with starter staying engauged, to test starter relay, jump at relay bat + post with red/bk wire on solonoid, if cranks over without staying engaged, then not relay or starter but rather in your ign switch, ford had bad problems with ign switch some years ago doing that

You need to make sure the starter is not staying engaged,if the starter is still turning,while the engine is running can damage the flywheel teeth.Look for a starter solenoid to be the problem,on the fender well.If the starter is not staying engaged,then the flywheel teeth are damaged on the flywheel.
