My 92 vw passat was running fine then one day it started chugging and dieing at first it would start right back up and run, but soon it would not run long enough to get it out of the driveway. The fuel pump was making noise so I changed both pumps and the filter, now the car won't start at all.

SOURCE: vw passat 1.8t battery problem?

Hi

Either your battery has just given up the ghost,........ Is it the original, and now 10 yrs old ?
Or your Alternator is not charging enough, to replenish what is used.

Have battery tested first, if OK, then the alternator belt tension, and alternator for correct output charging rate.

If all these shows no faults, your starter is then suspect.

Good Luck !

A FixYa would be nice thanks !....John.

SOURCE: 92 vw passat and the odometer does not work

Okay i had this same problem, i paid $600 dollars for an electrician to fix it.
You might want to check to see if the horn works. Usually when one thing on the dashboard goes out of wack so does the hole thing (specially the gas meter mine left me on the street). Check the horn, the speedometer, the time on the dashboard. If you want to tackle this problem yourself i recommend that you check all the electrical fuses they should be under the string wheel and the relays. Check those, or if you have a friend or someone who knows about this kind of things, you might want to ask them for help. I strongly recommend you check the relay before you consider taking it to an electrical mecanic. I am not sure of the name (or if it even exist) but try searching for the odometer relay.
Hope this helps.

Mike fuel filter may be dirty and plugging after running tank so low or possibly fuel pump has now weakened and is failing. Have vehicle scanned o see if diagnostic codes are stored to help diagnose.

Have a 97 VW Passat VR6, it died one day as the check engine light came on, it would run for a few minutes and then die, running shorter each time. Took it in to the shop and got the fuel pump replaced,...

You need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.if pressure is at spec. Check spark at the plugs. Also replace relay for fuel pump if it isn't working. Could be a bad new fuel pump. Pull the codes first.

I have a vw passat 97 and sometimes when i put the throtle down the power dies and will stay very low but if i turn the engine off and start again the power is back.

My older 1992 passat done this when the catalytic converter was worn and little bits broke away inside causing loss of power and would run fine for a while or for a day then be a bother with the same problem, with the converter cool just tap it lightly with your hand(it's in the left of engine bay behind the headlight unless yours is under the car if its the mk4 from picture) and listen for rattling sounds or start the car and listen to it.
