ETC Engine Fail Mode

I was wondering what does ETC engine fail mode actually means and how can I solve this problem.

    yes it stalls and wont go over 30 mph but I took it to the Lincoln dealer and after 2weeks I guess they fixed it

    so what did they charge you for repairing? That could help people start out fixing the right thing, and not searching and trying this and trying that. It sounds as if you may have had them trying different things too. Somebody mentioned that there are coils that are an issue and might lead to this. These coils are suppose to have gotten an extended warranty from Ford now. Anybody else here this?

    I own a 2003 Lincoln Ls, 64,000 miles. Fail safe mode indicator has illuminated twice, but no codes are even reading on the computer. It states, no communication. Don't know where to start. Like everyone else, the car is driveable after reset, but you never know when this may happen again. Don't want to be stranded, only able to accelerate to 40 mph.

    I have a 2005 LS, V8, the ETC Engine Fail Mode has come on several times. I had it checked at the dealership, there were no problem codes showing up. They said maybe the thermostat was sticking. This would be at least $500 to fix. Any ideas?

    On my way to work this morning, my failsafe mode light came on and I pulled over. My had limited engine power and was very concerned because my car had never done this before. I just got it back from the shop two days ago where they had to change out a bad coil.

What controls the a/c stepup in 2004 vitara j20 engine


happy new year.
WHAT IS THE RPM>?
hot or cold engine? both key factors.
the a/c puts a large load on the engine
the engine J20 is powerful, and has idle controls
so now those controls are dead.
1: if engine has full power then its not due to lean bogging at idel
2: idle controls failing, ISC failure or failsafe mode.(pcm)
3; Seizing a/c compressor.

idle controls are suspended in fails safe mode
idle controls will fail of engine is real lean.
idle controls will fail if the engine is overloaded.

we check the a/c by hand to see if its ok.
we scan the PCm see if DTC ERRORS. SEE RPM AT 800
See coolant at 180F
we then make sure the engine at hot idle is at closed loop status
if not, we fix that first.

idle is last to fix, all else must be correct or idle will or can fail.
eg: running real lean, running rich and misfiring. etc.
Egr VALVE STUCK OPEN

What causes the CPS to go bad repeatedly in a 2001


USA car or the Export?

tell me what CPS means. we dont use that name since 1990

no engine stated, so how would we answer such a questions.

4.0L or 4.7L or 5.7L ?engine.

my guess is the cam sensor? or the crank sensor?

CKP or CMP?



how often once a week, decade, ?

all parts on care fail repeatably say in 100 years

but my guess i means, inside 5 years, but what, do say.

clear facts make answers very easy.





my wild guess.

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 4.0L 6 cylinder engine is bolted to the top of the oil pump drive shaft assembly. The sensor and drive shaft assembly is located on the right side of the engine near the oil filter.

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 3.7L V6 engine is bolted to the front/top of the right cylinder head.

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 4.7L V-8 engine is bolted to the front/top of the right cylinder head.

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 5.7L V8 engine is located on right side of timing chain cover below alternator.



The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) on the 4.0L 6 cylinder engine is mounted to the transmission bellhousing at the left/rear side of the engine block The CKP on the 3.7L, 4.7L and 5.7L engines is located at the left rear of the engine just above the starter motor.



now may guess based on those 2 sensors above.

the CAM SENSOR (in pure english) fails for heat.

all have a tendancy to fail for too much heat,

and for overheating the engine.



the closer it fits the the engine, the more likely it will fail. (heat)

some that fit to cam ends love to fail soon., heat.



failure mode 2 is overvoltage.

if the Alternator goes bad and overvoltage , in fact over 15v

any electronic part can fail, even light bulbs.

mode 3

using a pressure washer can wreck just about anything made.





mode 4

dropping it to the concrete,

you, others, or the shipper,



mode 5

a dumb ,mechanci , hot wired it and burned it up, or injured it. (called the walking wounded)



that pretty much covers it.

but what sensor exactly and what engine.

and how long did it last in months

get a scanner or a code reader connect it to your truckson board diagnostic connector and it will show trouble codesstored in your engine computer it will tell what sensor may be faulty

Fail safe engine mode mean in a 2000 jaguar s type?


Hi Walter, the fail safe mode is for getting you home when something goes wrong and you need to move the vehicle a short distance. If it is engaged you should take the vehicle for a scan and find out what is wrong. Regards John

What does an orange diagram of engine light means when it shows off


The amber colored engine lamp means that something is wrong with either the engine or transmission systems. Input sensors monitor the engine and transmission to be sure they are within factory specifications. With this information the computer can adjust things like fuel control, idle speeds, transmission shift points etc. If an input or output is not working correctly the computer will sense this an throw an engine lamp on the inform you that there is a concern. In most cases the computer will use information from other sensors to keep the vehicle running until repairs are made. In more serious cases, the computer will flash the engine lamp and/or put the vehicle in fail safe mode. Fail safe mode will limit the amount of fuel to the fuel injectors and sometimes limit the transmission speeds and throttle response. You need to have codes retrieved either from a dealer, service station or auto parts store. The auto parts store will usually do it for free but their tester may not pull all codes. Good luck.

Need to know what "trans failsafe mode" message


Trans failsafe is "Limp" mode, it means a sensor has triggered due to a fault in OBC. You need to bring it to BMW or a competent shop to have a fault scan done to identify the actual cause. Limp mode allows you to drive short distance (so you're not stranded roadside)

Does the etc engine fail safe mode engage when driving 20mpg or less in snow? I love 2003 lincoln LS. This question is not addressed in the owner's guide.


the engine fail safe [limp mode] engages for or when the engine/trans senses damage or something that can cause extreme damage[ no oil pressure] the limp mode is so u can safely get off road or to a service location

What does Failsafe Engine Mode mean? my manual was stolen


Hello! Fail safe mode is when the vehicle's computer detects a serious problem an allows you to "limp" off the road or highway safely.

Fail safe mode on a Jaguar is mainly caused by a dirty and gummed up throttle body. The throttle body on your auto has a protective coating, so you can not use just any cleaner. It requires a throttle body cleaner that states "safe to use with a protective coating". The butterfly valve in the throttle body will actually "stick out". This causes fail safe mode to kick in reducing the amount of power your engine can produce.

Also check the plugs on your ECM (computer) and make sure they are all seated properly.

I do not know about a Jag. But the "fail safe engine mode " on my GMC means the Engine Controll Computer has quit working.
