Question about GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

GMC Jimmy 1998 4X4 4 dr Steering issue. Too much play in steering wheel. In aggressive steering (cross wind) correction is made and when it comes back to normal driving it over steers and can put you in the wrong lane or ditch if not dilligent. Like steering speed control issue on pickup trucks. Is there a steering speed control on my jimmy? Is it tied in with the ABS speed control? How or does this affect the 4X4 shifting (issue here too)?

No, the problem is not yet overcome, but it appears as if this fixer-uper has been fixed up before with steering parts that are not compatible with '98 Jimmy's. I've left it in the hands of a local GM geru who claims to be able to fix it. I'll keep the email and keep you posted.

If I start my 1999 GMC Jimmy without the key will I be able to drive it without the steering wheel locking up on me

if you can turn the ignition to the run position it should not lock up on you. if you are starting it without turning the ignition it will probably lock the steering wheel.

How to change a front wheel bearing on a 97 Jimmy?

Vibration is usually caused by drive shaft universal join wear, but could be tires. A bad wheel bearing will usually only make a noise and you would feel a roughness in the cab or the steering wheel. You can check the U-joints by going under the vehicle, grabbing the drive shaft and see if there is lateral play at either end. If it is this, you will cause a lot of damage if it comes loose at either end, so you should deal with it promptly.

My 2003 GMC Jimmy has excessive vibration when accelerating hard or at speeds of over 80 km/hr - 50 MPH. Could this be a u-joint issue?

If the vibration is in the steering wheel, and you are in 2wd then chances are it is not you're u-joints. I would get other car on a Lift, check ball joints and steering linkage for play. You may jut need to balance your tires

I have a 2000 gmc jimmy 4x4 . i have rebuilt the front end with all new parts ,but i think i have a steering box issue now . you can jack each side up and check for play and there is very little play on...

I would look for where the box bolts to the chassis, there is a possibility that the chassis is cracked. I believe there are three bolts that hold the box on and have seen chassis crack there. Good luck and let me know.
