The windshield wiper on the driver's side got stuck under the one on the passengers side while in use. It finally came loose, but when the rain started again, the driver's side wiper would not work.

Your wipers have a transmission of its own. It is located between the wiper motor and the wiper arms. the linkage to the right wiper arm has fallen off. More than likely you will need to replace the transmission. If the wiper motor is original, replace it at the same time. Sometimes you can buy the two together. Any other questions, feel free to write back, good luck.
Either the wiper arms are loose or stripped on the pivots or the wiper linkage is broken. Try tightening the arm to pivot bolt. If that doesn't work, remove the plastic cowling and examine the linkage. You can buy new linkage for it.
From your post, "Finally had enough and stuffed a small block of wood between the driver's side bottom of the molded plastic linkage frame enough to lift the whole thing enough to put a moderate amount of pressure behind the wiper blade..", it sounds like this box is warped or somehow out of alignment. Is it possible for you to buy this box from a wrecking yard? Has you car ever been in a collision? If so the frame may have so un-repaired buckling resulting in the misalignment.
If the AC is not on when it leaks during the raining, AND you are SURE it is not the windshield....It can only be coming in from 1 of 2 other places...your firewall or the firewall break...Somewhere towards the center of the firewall, a rubber grommet is missing or torn or loose, allowing the water to enter...Or you have a leak along the firewall brrak area at the top ridge that goes from the drivers to passenger side in that vented looking area where the wiper and / or fresh air door for the AC is located.
the problem is in the mechanics of the wiper at the firewall (inside undr the vents) the connector to the wiper arm has come loose from the controlling arm (laymen's terms) you'll need to access the workings and re-connect the arm..the access panel is normally held on with a few screws.....make sure the repair will stay connected and is not worn out.. good luck to you....it is about an hour fix...
Hello, I would say that is exactly what has happened. If you can move the wipers with no resistance it's likely one of the bolts has come loose. Both wiper arms are linked to one wiper motor.
It is underneath the black plastic pieces under/below the wipers. There are just a few round fasteners that hold down the passenger side piece that need to be removed to access the filter. You have to remove the windshield wiper arms, then take off the plastic molding that lies between your windshield. Once that is off (it comes out in two pieces) on the passenger side of the car, under the windshield just behind the firewall there is a plastic rain shield with two screws. Remove the rain shield. The cabin filter is under that rain shield. FYI...every bolt is metric, and be careful when removing the plastic molding-only turn those screws a half turn, they break very easily!
Sounds like you just nee to remove them and reinstall them in the correct position. Take them off, run the wipers for one cycle until they park. Install the arms so the blade is about an inch above the bottom of the windshield.
take the cap off the bottom of the wiper with a screw driver and in most cases the nut under the cap is loose take it to auto zone or napa and ask them to take a quick look for you because they install wipers for free
