Question about 1991 Nissan Sentra 2 Door

Front spindles the l/r front spindles the bearings keep going bad and the wheels keep working themselves loos destroying front brake pads.

    any noticeable vibration after you have replaced the bearings... and are the cv joints ok ?

Ok... replace them....inspect the bearings and replace if necessary....

2001 Ford windstar has a rumble/vibration on left front when driving over speeds of 10 mph. Consstant and increases with speed.


It sounds like you have a bad spindle/hub. You will need to jack up the front left tire, remove the wheel and the brake caliper and pads. Now spin the hub by hand. If you hear a grinding like sounds or low rumble sound, or there is more resistance than normal, replace your hub/spindle assembly.

Grinding noise in driver side front wheel.


You either have a bad wheel bearing, or a bad brake pad. Does it do this only when you apply the brakes, or making turns, or is it continues. If its only while using the brakes, most likely the brake pads are worn. If it only does this while making turns, may be wheel bearing. Remove the front driver wheel and inspect the brake pad liners. check the thickness of the pads, make sure the pads are not metal to metal. to check the wheel bearing, while wheel is still on the car, put the front of car on jack stands, while wheel is off the ground spin the wheel and listen for any noise that sounds like the sound it was making while driving. If it makes this noise, you then can take a steel tube about 3 to 5 feet long, put it under the wheel and lift up and down on the wheel, and notice if it has any movement or play as you lift it up and down, if it moves, then likely its the wheel bearing.

Wondering if a novice can replace rotors and brake pads on a 2007 chevrolet suburban ltz? Do u have to do the wheel bearings also during rotor removal? Any special tools that might need to be purchased?


A novice can replace brake pads, but the rotors may be more difficult if they are not floating.
Check with the parts store to see if they are floating. If they are, you are in luck and can change the rotor once the calipers are off.

Some front wheel bearings are sealed units and are lubricated for life. They are replaced and serviced as an assembly. Others are serviceable and require periodic lubrication and adjustment.
Except when making slight adjustments to the bearings, the bearing assembly must be removed for all service work.
  • This is done with the vehicle on lifts and the wheel assembly removed.
  • In the center of the hub there is a dust (grease) cap.
  • Using slip-joint pliers or a special dust cap removal tool, wiggle the cap out of its recess in the hub.

  • Now remove the cotter pin and nut lock from the end of the spindle.
  • Loosen the spindle nut while supporting the brake assembly and hub.
  • On many vehicles you will need to remove the brake caliper to remove the brake disc and hub.
  • Once the hub is free to come off the spindle, remove the spindle nut and the washer behind the nut.
  • Move the hub slightly forward, then push it back. This should free the outer bearing so you can remove it.
  • Now remove the hub assembly. A grease seal located on the back of the hub normally keeps the inner bearing from falling out when the hub is removed.
  • To remove the bearing assembly, the grease must be removed first. In most cases, all you need to do to remove the seal is pry and pop it out of the hub.
  • The inner bearing should then fall out.
  • Keep the outer bearing and inner bearing separated if you plan on reusing them.
  • Wipe the bearings and races or use brake parts cleaner to clean them.
  • While doing this, pay close attention to the condition and movement of the bearings. The bearings need to rotate smoothly.
  • Also visually inspect the bearings and races after they have been cleaned. any noticeable damage means they should be replaced.
  • Also inspect the spindle. If it is damaged or excessively worn, the steering knuckle assembly should be replaced.
  • Whenever a bearing is replaced, its race must also be replaced.
  • Races are pressed in and out of the hub. Typically the old race can be driven out with a large drift and a hammer. Once the race has been removed, wipe all grease from the inside of the hub.
  • The new race should be installed with the proper driver.
  • During assembly, the bearings and hub assembly must be thoroughly and carefully lubricated.
  • Care must be taken not to get grease on the brake disc or on any part that will directly contact the disc.
  • Always use the recommended grease on this assembly. The grease must be able to withstand much heat and friction. If the wrong grease is used, it may not offer the correct protection or it may liquefy from the heat and leak out of the seals.
  • The bearings should be packed with grease. It is important that the grease is forced into and around all of the rollers in the bearing. Merely coating the outside of the bearing with grease will not do the job.
  • A bearing packer does the best job at packing in the grease. If one is not available, force grease into the bearing with your hand. Install the greased inner bearing into the hub.
  • Install a new grease seal into the hub.
  • To avoid damaging the seal, use the correct size driver to press the seal into the hub.
  • Lubricate the spindle, then slip the hub over the spindle. Install the outer bearing, washer, and lock nut.
  • The lock nut should be adjusted to the exact specifications given in the service manual.
  • Often it is tightened until the hub cannot rotate, then it is loosened about one-half turn before it is set to the specified freeplay. The initial tightening seats the bearings into their races.
  • Once the lock nut is tightened, install the nut lock and use a new cotter pin to retain the lock.
  • The adjustment of the bearings can be checked with a dial indicator.

  • Mount the base of the indicator as close as possible to the center of the hub.
  • Locate the tip of the indicator's plunger on the tip of the spindle.
  • Set the indicator to zero.
  • Firmly grasp the brake disc and move it in and out.
  • The total movement shown on the indicator is the amount of freeplay at the bearing.
  • Compare your reading to the specifications and make adjustments as necessary.
WARNING Throughout this entire process, your hands will have grease on them. Be very careful not to touch the brake assembly with your greasy hands. Clean them before handling the brake parts or use a clean rag to hold the brake assembly.
  • The front bearing arrangement often found on FWD and 4WD vehicles is often nonserviceable.
  • These bearings are pressed in and out of the hub to be replaced. To do this, the axle or half shaft is removed, as is the steering knuckle and hub assembly.
  • The bearings may be sealed and require no additional lubrication or they may need to be packed with grease when they are reassembled. In most cases, the bearings are not adjusted.
  • A heavily torqued axle nut is used to hold the assembly in place on the axle.
  • This nut is typically replaced after it has been removed and is staked in place after it is tightened.

Humming noise right front, would this be a wheel bearing


Hi,

Its a good possibilty,The Bearing will humm ,if no grease in them or very little. I would Stop driving it to save some money cause if its a wheel bearing, it will only get worse and its 1st of all not SAFE,2nd The bearing will also damage your Hub and Spindle,and any other front end parts that heat from the bearing will Damage,Like your Front Brake Rotor and Brake Pads. So .Pull off that wheel and Check it out,You'll have to Pull Caliper and Rotors as Well.

Many times if one side goes out (Wheel Bearing) normally not long before both==I recommend you Change out Wheel Bearings and Bearing Races On BOTH sides.

How do you remove front wheel bearings on 2000 dodge ram1500 2wd?


if you have never done wheel bearings, i would suggest having someone else fix it, other wise if you know about grease and bearings in general then move forward......you will have to take off the wheel, then the brake system (maybe, as you can sometimes service the bearing without removing the rotor from the hub but not recomended as grease and brakes dont mix well), to remove the brake system there should be some pins (bolts) that hold on the caliper, once you have those out you may have to shake the caliper around to get it off the pads. once off the pads then you will be able to remove the pads and the carrier to the pads (more bolts) then the rotor, you may have to use a rubber mallet to hit it from the back sides while either turning the rotor a quarter turn or hitting it in different spots on the rotor to get it off the hub. there should be a small cap on the hub that you will have to remove, looks like a small army hat, then once that is removed you will be able to have access to the axle nut. it should be a castle nut and have a cotter pin going through the spindle. you may have to remove some grease to gain access to this. once you have the nut removed the hub should be able to be removed from the spindle. If the bearings have been spun (ran dry and essentially welded themselves to the spindle) then you will have to either replace the spindle too or if its not severe you can cut the race (inner ring of the bearing) from the spindle. assembly is in reverse order

Why does my ford escort give a grinding noise from the front left wheel on braking, with or without the brakes applied?


Your brake squealers are rubbing, telling you it is time to change the pads before they wear down the rotors. If that isn't the sound you got then the bearing is shot and you have less time to fix it because it will weld itself to the spindle and you will have to replace more parts. Hope this helps.

Changing front wheel bearrings. how?


Dear Wheel Bearing Replacer,
First off, get the vehicle safely supported high enough in the air so you can remove the front wheels.Once the front wheels are off then remove the brake calipers and caliper bridges by removing the two bolts on the back side of the spindle.The whole brake caliper and mount along with pads will come off for you.You will need to tug a little so the pads will pass over the rotor when you pull them off.After the caliper is off swing that out of the way.Then remove your rotor, if it does not easily fall off then a coule little taps with a soft hammer will persuade.Then you will have bolts on the back of the spindle that you need to loosen and remove to remove the bearing.After those are loose then loosen your halfshaft nut and remove that, take the outer end of the halfshaft out, then you can replace the bearing and hub assy...any other questions get back to me...I'M HERE TO HELP!!!

It sounds like you have a wheel bearing going out. Get it replaced before it tears your spindle up.

Need help changing the front rotors on my chevy 3500 4x4 dually


Have to pull the front wheels, next back out the two caliper bolts (Allen head), next slide the caliper out of it's seat and set up on the spindle, careful not to damage the flex brake line. This will now free the rotor to come off the spindle. This is also a good time to check/replace brake pads. Chances are if your changing rotors, due to brake damage, warped or other, the pads need changed. This is simply done by sliding the old pads out and placing a C clamp over the piston to back it into the caliper housing to allow room to install new pads. Apply a little antisieze lub behind the pad between the piston and also anywhere the new pad bears. Install the caliper in reverse order and put the wheels back on. Remember to test the brakes before hitting the road, The new pads will have to be pushed out by applying brakes a few times. Then you should be good to go.
