Question about 2000 Ford Focus

2000 Ford focus PO123,PO1120

Car is automatic,2.0,Zetec,DOHC.
I took it to dealer to diagnose "check engine" light.when this light appear,revs when crazy when shifting gears and tranny made a clunck noise.
Dealer recommend changing the whole throttle body,but the could'nt get the parts,because there is a national back order for these,.So they suggest to go after market,.I change the whole throttle body and the revs went back to normal,but still the tranny its making the noise and the light came back with the same codes.
I tried replacing the throttle position sensor,and the new one makes the revs crazy,.So still using the old one.
Any suggestions?

    Fix it! all have to do was play with the angle of the tps.

    Ford service department could not find a listing for for my current TPS sensor and suggested that previous owner may have changed manual transmission from manual to automatic. The parts are different. After market stores only sell the manual version

Clunking from the tranny has nothing to do with the tps or anything even close to it. you may end up needing a new transmission. my friend has the same car as you and apparently they are notorious for having terrible transmissions.
do a vaccuum test to diagnose the revving properly

The 2000 Ford Focus has the Zetec engine, I believe. On the Zetec, the camshaft timing using notches carved out of the REAR end of the camshafts. With the valve cover off, you would need a special tool(we use a metal piece similar to the shape and size of a measuring ruler we all used in k-12 school) to insert into both camshaft rear notches to line up the timing. Other than that just make sure the crank is lined up. Presto!

Note: There are 2 ways those notches can line up, there's "right side up" and "upside down" ... The special tool should ONLY fit into the notches when they are right side up. The thickness of the tool would need to be about 2-3mm(I think).

If you Blew off the timing belt then need Head work also since it is an interference Motor
meaning that the Valve train and Pistons Have no Clearance so U are going to need a lot more work than just a timing belt to run

I have a 2000 ford focus 2.0 zetec dual overhead cam with a broken timing belt at low speed. Is this engine a non interference engine?


all Zetec engines (2.0 DOHC) are NOT interference engines. There are deep reliefs cut into the top of the piston to clear the valves when they are fully extended. There will be no valve damage if the timing belt breaks on a Zetec engine.

Loss of acceleration


Before you end up with a huge repair bill I would strongly advise you to have the fault codes read by a main VW dealer. A faulty EGR valve will show up immediately in this case or the diagnoses will quickly point elsewhere.

Main dealers have the proper software for reading faults stored in the cars computer and it is not that expensive to have this done. Most will do it for around £40 - check with them beforehand of course! Small independents usually have a generic fault reader which is generally quite unreliable at diagnosing this type of fault.

In this particular case the best case scenario is a faulty EGR valve. Worst case scenario is that either the injector pump or turbo is faulty. These can all cause the symptoms you describe. Get the fault read then take the car back to the local garage to have the work done and so save on labour rates.
