2003 Dodge DSL 2500 transmission shifting problems

When the truck is cold it works fine, once the truck has warmed up (15-20min) it starts showing problems. When I put it into reverse to back out of wherever then put it back into drive, the transmission doesn't want to shift into second, sometimes i can get it to shift if i rev the engine up enough, then i have to do it all over again to get it to shift into 3rd gear. If i stop the truck and shift it into park then back into drive it will work fine like nothing was ever wrong, that is untill i have to shift into reverse again. Once the truck cools down it works fine. Any ideas?

Thanks for the info man. I took it to the dodge dealer today to have them diagnos it, the transmission wasn't poppping any codes on the computer but they did say that my truck batteries were weak and that could be the reason it's doing that. They also said that my transmission governors could be going bad and that if the batteries didn't work then i should try them, what you think?

Sounds like you should start by dropping the pan and changing the filter, put cheap fluid in it or reuse the old fluid if its not too bad bring it to a shop and have a transmission flush performed with a good flush machine your valve body is sticking and this should clear things up please rate -jeff

I have a 1999 dodge 2500 and when the trucks cold the transmission works fine but as it gets warm it won't shift in first gear. What could it be?

You may just have to change the fluid, old fluid will allow auto transmissions to slip and they may not shift properly ! Its a cheap fix! compared to a trans rebuild ! Good Luck!

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

Shifting problems

The transmission/computer is designed not to go into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp and I don't remember what the temp is. Mine does same thing and it has 250,000 miles on it. When you start your truck up do you start it and warm up in neutral? The transmission fluid won't flow unless it is. There is know way to force it to shift into overdrive until it warms to the set temp.

Hope this helps
