Question about GMC K2500

1 Answer

1996 GMC K2500, 5.7 eng, auto trans. Sometimes when you let off the throttle and apply the brake the engine will die or try to die. I had the a/c serviced and while idleing the engine suddenly stopped, it did this 3 more times, but only with the a/c on. Engine dying when you apply the brake was happening prior to the a/c being serviced.

You need to clean the idle speed control valve and the throttle valve, they are most likely sludged up, use carb spray, do it with the enginge at high idle speed, after you are done disconnect the batt. for 5 min. and the reconnect, drive a few miles and your problem should go away.

is it an oil leak or other fluid --under engine you have the oil filter - power steering lines-transmission pan ,lines -transfer case -front c/v axles and center ham -coolant-brake fluid-and gas all these lines are at the back of the trucks engine you need to look at whats wet and where to pin point a fluid leak best is by color trans-power steering usually redish --oil, transfer, axle, blackish ---coolant green or red --brake, tan

How can I tell motor mounts are broken

start the car and with the brakes applied put trans in forward gear and push on the throttle and if the engine raises the mount on the side the engine raises is the side the mount is broken. then put it in reverse and do the same thing if the engine raises then that mount is broken.

Keeps trying to die when you push the brake or turn on the ac or heat?

sounds like you have a broken ground wire, check passenger side og engine towards back of eng. Should have a groung wire from eng to firewall and ground from firewall to frame, if one of these is broken (rusted through) it will cause the problem you are having because when you apply brakes or turn on heat/ac it takes away ground for eng.

1996 GMC Suburban will start, but shortly after, it will bog down and die. In drive gear, truck wont go over 25 mph. and when I brake, the truck dies.I have replaced the fuel pump already, but the problem...

Can you hear a hissing sound? by saying the engine dies when you apply the brake makes me think you may be loosing vacuum and the brake booster my be bad. This will make the engine stall.

My 1996 GMC jimmy wants to stall when I come to a stop. The RPM gage goes up & down then drops below 1000 RPMS and stalls.

I would go down to your local auto parts store and do an alternator and battery test. It sounds like at low rpms you are loosing volts. When you apply the brakes you would be supprised how much power from the engine it takes. You could also be loosing oil pressure. Check your oil level. When your engine drops low rpm, the oil pressure drops and shuts down the engine.

1996 GMC Jimmy will not shift into overdrive.

4th gear failure is a common problem with this transmission, assuming it is an automatic. You should have the vehicle checked for codes by a qualified repair center with the proper scan tool. Also, check fluid level and condition. More often than not, the trans loses 3rd and 4th gear, as these are working off the same set of clutches. 3-4 clutches apply in 3rd, and when the 4th shift is made the 2-4 band applies giving you overdrive. If you have no engine braking in manual 3rd, you definitely have a mechanical failure, no 4th could be an electrical, or mechanical fault.

Jeep stalls

I had the same problem... frustrating.

I picked up a repair manual at the parts store. I took off the throttle body and cleaned it with throttle body cleaner spray. I changed the Idle Air Control Valve (idle speed motor) which was very clogged. While I had the throttle body off I also changed the Map Sensor and Throttle Position Sensor. The manual will walk you through the steps. I had never done anything like this before. If I can do you so can you.
My Jeep has never run better. Good Luck
