I believe your head gasket is shot. Check your coolant level, it's probably going down. What's happening is your coolant is leaking into the oil where the gasket has failed (there are channels in the head of the engine that oil travels thru to lubricate the engine, and other channels (passages) that the coolant flows thru to keep the engine from overheating. This needs to be fixed with the installation of a new head gasket. countrycurt0

Ok so I have a 1996 golf gti and for some reason it will blow out this really thick cloud of white smoke when I try to step on it and go fast it happends every time in second gear when I hit 4,000 rpm but...

First thing - How Many Miles does this Golf Have?
Which engine does it have?
Diesel? Smoke on acceleration indicates the injection pump may need attention.
Gas Engine? Don't believe a turbocharger was a factory option - so - smoke on acceleration is probably piston rings - usually happens after a lot of miles. Best way to confirm that is by running a compression test - dry/wet test - warm up engine, check compression (dry part) - then - add a couple squirts of oil to the cylinder and check compression again.
If the added oil increases compression by 20 to 30 PSI or more / you have compression ring issues.
Let me know if this helps you out
thanks

it may not be anything to do with oil, it could be that you have a coolant leak that needs to be checked out. white smoke is usually an indication of coolant more so than oil.

White smoke out tailpipe car has 17300.00 miles

White smoke is coolant being burnt in the cylinder,
most likely from a failed head gasket

I would think a 1989 is too old to fix
Cost more than the car is worth

Any oil useage between oil changes every
say 3000 to 4500 miles is too much, engine is
worn

White smoke coming out of tail pipe.

WHITE smoke? Or BLUE smoke? White smoke is usually caused by burning antifreeze (possible blown head gasket). Engine oil burning causes a bluish colored smoke.

Changing the oil two months ago means absolutely nothing to me. I have customers that travel 6000 miles or more in a month. Oil consumption is measured in volume over miles, not volume over months. It is normal for most 4 cylinder engines to use a little less than 1/2 quart in 1000 miles (even more than that for 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines).

How to check the oil. The dip stick has no method of measuring other than a small white knob on the end.

Done with scanner and it reads out oil level in mm. If oil level low, a warning with show on cluster.

Most modern vehicles measure oil level this way....as well as the transmission.

The Dip Stick tube is only for sucking out the oil. This is known as 'Top Side Evacuation'.

Some DIY types collect and measure the drained oil and refill with same amount.
