Temporary Workaround for Solution 2 to bypass the ignition not starting the car because of the bad 'neutral safety' switch. clip a wire to your starter/solenoid flat contact and touch the POSITIVE terminal on battery. Starts right up and NOT dead in the water. Until you get a switch ordered, you can still use the vehicle. Just pop the hood each time and have the ignition key in the ON position!

Do all the warning lights in the instrument cluster come on when you turn the key? If Yes, then you need to check the neutral safety switch on the side the transmission[Automatic in your Montero?], as these are a known failure part for higher mile Monteros. You lose power to the starter solenoid as a result of the switch contacts going bad. Have someone put a test light on the solenoid wire at the starter motor, while you or a friend carefully tries to start the engine. If the circuit is working correctly, you'd see the test light turn on brightly. I'm betting you'll see no light, since I suspect the switch isn't letting power through.

Check the cam position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor for loose connections or possibly a bad sensor. Run a diagnostic test to give you a better idea of which parts are faulty.

You will need to do a 2 trip monitor drive cycle. What this means it needs to see 2 cold start up, from 60 F to operating temperature of 210F.and driven around town, for at least 15 minutes, then shut down for at least 5 minutes then driven again. Each manufacture has a precise way of doing this monitor set, from my experience go around town, your a 1997 the only monitor you dont have to set is evap.Simply explained just drive it

Hello, we have a problem with our Saturn SL 1997. Suddenly the alarm system started. We did not do anything which could start an alarm system. We tried to put the key into the ignition but nothing...

My guess is it has something to do with the anti theft security system. This is the system that has to do with that little black chip in the shaft of you key. Is the SECURITY light lit up on the dash when you put the key in? If you see it at all, this is your problem. Check this link for info http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/ and answers to the problem.

the shifter cable may have worked loose or broken. do you feel the same resistance that you used to when shifting? or just a very loose floppy shifter,if so,i suggest a broken or loose shifter cable.thank you for choosing fixya.com and by the way no relay will keep your shifter from shifting gears from park to drive, reverse.

We have a 95 mitsubishi montero. the car will

I'll check my information on adjustment of the neutral safety switch. In the meantime to access the fuel pump you'll need to take up the carpet (and some pad) in the back of the Montero. I believe there is an aluminum strip towards the back of it that will need to be removed, @ 4-6 screws I think. Once this is removed roll the carpet forward and look for an access panel on the floor of the truck (it should only be 2ft or so from the back gate over the tank. If you remove the access cover you'll see the access to the tank directly underneath it; in the end pretty easy to get to. I do believe the sending unit will be an assembly, the fuel pump can of course be seperated from. As fore mentioned I'll check further on the neutral safety switch.
I hope this may have assisted,
Tom

After shut down engine still working for 10-15sec. Even when key is out.

The engine is "dieseling" ... the cylinders probably have "hot spots" or a fuel injector is "leaking" into a cylinder.

Same cure for both: Obtain a can of "fuel injector cleaner" ($6) or better yet, a can of "Complete Fuel System" cleaner ($10) at any auto supply store.

Add to your gasoline tank.

It will correct the issue within a couple of days' use. Buy brand name, not "store brand", even if you save a couple of bucks, the dieseling can damage your engine.

One trick to temporarily stop the dieseling is when you are ready to turn off the car, turn off your car in "Drive" instead of "Park"; then after the engine stops (immediately) put the car in Park. "Drive" will put enough load on the engine to prevent it from running.

Hope this helps!

95 montero sputter and loses power when gas padel is push hard

If there is a check engine light take it to a auto parts store to double check what i think it is. If you O2 sensor has failed or your M.A.S. sensor (mass airflow sensor) has failed then your engine will not regulate fuel properly.
