Question about 1988 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

88 wrangler wont crank

I recently bought an 88 wrangler, and I can't get it started. I put a new battery in it and replaced the starter. The lights work inside and out but when you turn the key nothing happens. I tried bypassing the solenoid with a jumper wire and still nothing. I would be happy to here any helpful suggestions. Thanks

Sorry, just realized I forgot a couple of things that could be critical. First, the body has been lifted. Also it has a 4.2L engine and it is a five speed. There are also some things I found odd. The starter that was on does not match the listed starter for that model. The listed starter has the solenoid on the starter, but it is mounted on the fender in this jeep. The starter that was on it looks identical to the one on my 73 commando with the same size engine. I also replaced the starter relay. The one that came out of the jeep had four terminals labeled Battery, sol, I, and G. The one that is listed has five terminals, the extra terminal labeled F. Thanks for your suggestion jeff, I'll try it out and see what happens

Is this a manuel or automatic transmission? if its automatic try forcing the shift lever forward while trying to start, if its a manuel check the clutch pedal switch , if no luck with those check to see if the ignition switch is giving 12volts in the start position, if not then just put a momentary contact push button on the dash and put key on power to one side of the button and the other side to the small wire on the starter then you have yourself a push button start with the key on only so there are no accidents, please rate -jeff

i was told that if the jeep all of a sudden didnt start on its own without giving it gas, then next time you start it hold the pedal all the way to the floor and it resets something in the computer and sets you back to normal.

1992 Oldsmobile 88 Royale.... won't start, but all lights come on

Try turning the key to the on postion-not crank, just to he postion right before cranking. leave it in that postion for 15 min, Do this three and after the third time go ahead an try to start it. Hopefully this will reset your security for you.

Sounds like the starter. You can try several things but the main idea is to start it to be able to bring it to a mechanic. Disconnect the battery and push on the brake pedal. This will drain the power from the vehicle. Reconnect the battery and try to start the car. The theory behind this is the starter solenoid could be stuck energized. You can also locate the starter slightly tap on the starter and then try to start the vehicle. Also if the vehicle has sacked for some time before you purchased it the battery may not have the cranking amps necessary to start the vehicle. The electrical gizmos will work but it will not be enough to crank the engine. Check the battery is fully charged and possibly try to hook up jumper cables to another vehicle or a jump start Appliance.

88 Ford Aerostar clicks and wont start

Check the starter solenoid next to the battery. Sometimes it will not energize and just click.

WOnt run over - battery good - can turn it over but jumping the starter

if the battery is good and you jump the starter she should run otherwise you may have a sensor issue, try to get a hold of a code reader and see if any codes have popped up..
