Question about 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis

7 Answers

Headlights come on by remote and some times they dont. I tried using the switch on manual and sometime it works and sometimes not. Parking lights, directionals, dashall work fine. The only problem is the headlights not working. 2004 mer. grand marquis headlights will go off unexpectedly either in manual or auto mode.   the only way  to get lights is to pull back on the turn signal lever.  problem will last for 5-10 min. then lights will operate normally for a while and the cycle will repeat.

The headlight switch or its connections are commonly the problem. Your car has a tilt wheel and I have seen the wires pull out of the headlight switch after a while of using the tilt wheel. Im not saying that using the tilt wheel is all of the problems.
The electrical contact get dirty and also have seen where it causes resistance and heat build-up causing the circuit breaker inside the headlight switch to open causing the headlights circuit to not work.
I would change the mulitfunction switch and check the harness connector to make sure the wires are securely attached. Be sure to buy the switch at the dealer as they have the most updated parts to cure all these problems, Use Dielecreic frease on all connections when you install the new part.
Please rate this advice a fixya if you feel it is helpful and if you need any further help on this problem email me at

The headlight dimmer and headlight circuits pass through the mulitifunction/turn signal switch, the most likely cause based on 20 years as a Ford dealer tech is that the multifunction switch has internal burnt or dirty contacts, this causes the make and break connection issue and hence the headlight problem. Replace the Multifunction switch.

This could the problem the with relay or please check for any loose contacts or any broken capacitors which is causing this problem...
most problems tend to be the result of a fairly simple and obvious cause, such as loose or corroded connectors, bad grounds or damaged wire insulation which causes a short. This makes careful visual inspection of components during testing essential to quick and accurate troubleshooting.

Good luckk.

My headlights and running lights don't work and my high beams barely stay on. Sometimes I have to hold up the high beam lever to make them stay on. I have checked the circuit breakers and they are not

On this model the headlight switch provides ground for the lights.
You have a right and left 15amp fuse for the headlights, not circuit breakers.
The parking lights use 3 different fuses. The headlight switch sends power to the body computer which activates a parking lamp relay.
Those components would need to be tested to verify the problem.

relay coil may be a bit weak and is sharing power with the headlight relay. Try swapping the relay with the horn relay or another similar one that is non-essential to operation of the car. If that doesn't work, you may have a loose wire on the headlight switch or at the relay socket.

Headlights work but parking lights dont..

if u have change and check the bulbs and fuses. great. fuses do go lose in a cherokee . move each fuse by hand while the lights are on or the switch is in the on position. if you find the problem this way. just take the fuse out and slightly twist the prong of the fuse and replace it back and ditto. make your daughter say " u d grate dad"

Green light on instrument panel

Hiya--the green headlamp logo on the instrument panel comes on automatically after you start up the engine.
The green light comes on when your headlight switch is on 'auto' until you turn it to 'parking lights' or 'full on' function, that'll turn off the green light...it's normal.
The other thing is if one of 2 headlight bulb reach the end of bulb life, the green light will flash on/off a few times then stay off....until you or the garage shop put in new headlight bulb.
