Question about 2008 Subaru Outback

New Subaru, idles up and down (high/low) during cold startup

Hi...

I just bought a 2008 2.5i Subaru Outback (PVEZ). One morning, my husband got into it and started it. I noticed that the idle ran high, then low and back and forth. We took it into the dealership for a checkup and the service guy said that they checked it over and couldn't identify a problem. He also said that the Subaru company sent a notice to them stating that the type of gas in the car may be the cause of the problem (something about the % of ethanol) and we should try a gas with a different amount of ethanol (I don't even know if the gas stations know what percentage of ethanol is in their gasoline.). Have you ever heard of this problem? Subaru told the service guy that it is normal. Unless it happens to every car on the lot, I doubt that it is "normal." The high and low idling seems to go away after the car is warmed up. I don't know if this will start happening more this Fall or not (when the gasoline is supposedly "blended" differently). Please give me whatever feedback you can, even if you have not idea what could be causing this.

I am experiencing the same problem with our 2008 Outback with manual transmission. idling though a parking lot is a fun ride not knowing when it is going to start acting up. In my opinion this is not right and the idle should remain constant at any speed and and pedal depressing.

This is down to the idle control valve or the sensors on the exhaust being faulty.

After reconnecting battery on a subaru outback car idles too low

If the alterntor has to work hard this could bring down you idle. and if the voltage regulator gets to hot and the "up the idle" signal does not reach the pcm then this could happen. But I'm 90% sure it's a bad grounding strap/cable cause this happend to me to. check the one to the trans. and the one to the body. and make sure they're clean with no rust or paint.

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback. Today it stalled on my way home and I was able to restart it. I thought maybe my oil was low so I added some. It stalled again this evening when my husband was driving and we...

I would have the head gasket checked.
When the engine is cold check the rad and overflow bottle.
These motors have a tendency to leak externally at the head gasket towards the rear of the engine.
Low coolant will cause over heating at the engine and loss of heat inside the car due to vapor locks.

I had this problem once on an econoline van and it was the plantum gasket but before you change this check all the vacuum lines and get a digital volt meter and test the voltages on the mass air flow sensor and if you have to change the plantum gasket auto zone can print you out a diagram stating all you have to remove to replace it

2004, 6 cylinder outback, engine idle speed

We bought our H6 used under warranty and had the problem the day it was delivered. Brought it in to the dealer and the diagnosed it as the throttle position sensor. It is an electronic component that works in conjuction with the fuel delivery system and it is faulty, it cannot tell what position the gas pedal is in, and therefore is randomly picking power settings.
We had it replaced, and never a problem since.
There are other possibilites to your problem, and this was our solution.
Hope that helps.
