If the bouncing is in the front it is probably a strut.
If the bouncing is in the rear it is probably a shock
look for the shock to be oily indicating the shock is bad. But
usually if the car is bouncing two or three time after hitting a bump
the shock has either broken or come completely loose.
what sort of noise clunks&bangs could be anything from shock mounting bushes exhaust hanging mounts or suspsion bushes.it would be a good idear 2 have a mechanic put it up on a hoist 2 check it out
hello,if it only does it when going over a bump, then its going to be in the suspension, will be bad/loose shock/strut, or a bad ball joint,( a bad ball joint will cause your tires to wear more on the inside edge of the tire also) if its a bad steering part (tie rod end, idler arm, ect.)you should have play in your steering back and forth? if you have a mechanic you trust, just swing the suv by his shop and with a minor inspection on a lift he can tell you which part is bad...yz-maniac
Check the ball joint, tie rods ( inner and outer ), sway bar end link and the strut for a broken spring or strut mount/bearing. It could also be something as simple as the battery being loose. I hope this was helpful for you.
most likely your problem is the exhaust system bumping. If it sounds like it is coming from front of vehicle, it may be struts clunking. Rear shocks can also do this if they are worn.
