I have the same problem. I think there was a leak in my air conditioning system and it made the car smell like mildew. I have had lexus replace my air conditioning system and evaporator and the smell still persists. I am working on filing a lemon law compliant becuase this has been going on for 2 yrs.

I owned a 2004 SC 430 that had the same odor coming from the A/C. The first thing the dealer did was change the cabin filter, but that did nothing, as that filter ONLY filters the air entering the cabin from the outside, and my problem was coming from recycled air. After about six months of complaining, mold was growing across the climate control to the point where it was unreadable in sunlight.

By the time Lexus finally changed out the A/C unit (a year later) it was too late, my health was already ruined. Lexus has tried to cover-up the whole thing in my opinion, even going so far as tampering with evidence that in my case, could have possibly improved my chances of recovery.

Burning smell

If it smells like burning a burning plastic/ceramic then your brakes are locking up and burning. Next time it does it, see if the smell is coming from the rear tire. if so, its time for a brake job

Drain plug for the A/C on my 2000 Hyundai Accent

Its a hose at the front of where the passengers feet area under the hood. Usually the problem is water holds and leaks on the floor. A repair shop may have a spray that they can coat the evaporator and kill the smell.

The mildew smell you refer to could be anti-freeze. When a heater core starts leaking it may allow anti-freeze (which circulates through it for heat) to be blown through the ducts onto the windshield in defrost mode. The repair is to have the heater core replaced. It may wait for the thermostat to open and allow the coolant to circulate before you notice it. Occasionally the carpet on the passenger side may be wet from leakage.

Look under the passenger side of the dash, behind the carpet. Feel the back side of the carpet for dampness. If so, try this: In the same area, look for a black rubber hose that comes from the heater plastic box, and pokes thru the firewall. See if it is plugged up. This is the drain pipe for the AC box, and the cowl panel if the side drains are plugged up. Try that, and please get back to me.

Does it smell like a dead animal? or just moldy mildew smell? If dead animal, get it out. If mold/mildew smell, treat it with an AC ventilation dodorizer.

sounds like the blower motor has burned out, that would account for the weird smell as u say, the blower motor is on the passenger side under the dash.

Musty air

Autoparts places have a spray now for that, to apparently remove mold & mildew build up in the system. It has instructions on the can I'm told. Personally, I use Lysol spray, or fabreeze & aim it in on passenger side of cowl where air is drawn into the system, (listen with heater on full, standing on passenger side, down near wiper arm pivot) with heater on medium or high, I spray it in there, and then change to vent, then defrost, then floor, to make sure I get all the duct work inside. I leave windows open so smell isn't too strong. Worst I have to do is clean inside of windshield if it leaves a film. May not be for everyone, but works for me.
