There is one small wire coming from ignition switch connected to the starter solenoid check for power wile one person try to start the car If that wire get power then replace your starter
make sure the cables are both good if they have a spot that feels flimsy the wires inside are likely corroded and the current is not running through it properly. a simple charging system check would be recommended.
Definitively there are some wires hook backwards with the connections. You would need to check very careful te wiring on your cars connectors. However, the installing of a new stereo shouldn't give you all that trouble. I have install a lot of stereos on cars and this is new to me. No't despair, it could all be but a wrong connection.
Evidently, you shorted out something. Strange that the accessory / dash fuse hasn't blown. 1) Unhook the CD, tape all the loose wires and see if dashboard operates normally. 2) make sure you are hooking the CD yellow wire (battery) and the red wire (ignition) to the proper sources. A normal CD installation has nothing to do with the dash/ dimmer circuit.
check the speakers in the rear deck, in the rear hatch or trunk, often the two wires that come out of the speaker touch if that happens it will short out the speaker drivers in the radio most times no permanant damage will occur. separate the wires so they do not touch,or touch the metal speker base, that may not be the problem but its a start..
You are correct on checking the sterio, just 12+ and ground to see if it powers up. Fuse 25, in your fuse box should be numbered. If not, just pull them one at a time to see which one got fried.
first of all you should always use a wire harness when installing a unit into a vehicle you should never cut the factory harness but guess you already did so here is the wire diagram for your car hope this helps http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Mitsubishi-Wiring.pdf
