Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

2002 Grand Cherokee engine revs

I have a GCL with about 62k on it. Recently I had a problem driving back from my in-laws. While cruising on the highway, I had the cruise control set at 60mph. I notice that the RPMs fluctuated from about 2k to 2200. The truck could/would not hold a steady RPM, but the speed was pretty close. I guess it was dropping in/out of OD to keep the speed. Also, I have noticed that the idle will fluctuate from 650 to 1000 RPMs after engine is warm.

Thanks

I had the same problem it was a sensor- once replaced the problem was resolved. They put it on the computer to to find out was sensor was out.

When I activate the cruise control, it holds the speed. But the transmission slips about every 20-30 seconds causing the tachometer to jump about 500 rpm. What could be causing this?

Since you have a Laredo this should be where it is going in and out of overdrive. The reason is because 60mph is right at the end of the power range before going into overdrive. The other reason on your idle fluctuation is due to the cooling fan kicking on and off. Higher RPM's occur as the engine is trying to cool back down after reaching optimal temp. I due have a partial solution if you want better performance out of your jeep and will help MPG. You can replace the spark plugs and air filter for both mpg and performance. Local auto store should be able to recommend platnium or iridium plugs for your jeep. But K and N is the best air filter to replace it with. It will cost around 50 dollars but it has a lifetime warranty and is cleanable. If you decide on new plugs make sure to spend a few extra bucks and get some with a 3 to 5 year warranty. Just replace them before the warranty is up. Stephen

cruise is last. the brains in the car dont allow this dangerous device to run, if things are bad. (even dead brake lights)

2002 jeep cherokee transmission slips when air condition is on

you need to change the throttle position sensor. This is not a transmission slip so to speak but a flux in the throttle body. the part is easy to fix and on a V8 lies
right behind the resinator behind the throttle body. I had the same issue with my 02 GCL. Part costs 40 bucks

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee just started making a clicking or rattling noise when starting up. The noise isn't audiable when driving. I've checked the oil level and it is normal. It is time for an oil change,...

so it goes away after a bit, that could be cause theres no oil on the top part of your engine, thats normal. wait till it gets older, it will be louder.

Oil pressure gauge reads normal when first starts. as it warms up, gauge goes to zero. If I rev engine, gauge goes back to normal.

Two things...when it reads zero, is there any engine noise (tapping or knocking)? After you rev the engine does the pressure read normal at idle and function normally, or does it go back down? Either way, you should not drive the vehicle 'till you have a mechanical gauge (yours is electro-mechanical) put on there and the actual pressure is tested. The condition may be a bad sending unit, a bad bearing or possible obstructed oil pump screen. The repair is obviously different for each one and the price is as well.

it is hard to know without scanning for codes, do you have a way to scan? If not parts stores usually do it for free.
