I was driving my car today and the engine light came and stayed on. I do not know what it could be. I checked the oil and antifreeze and they are ok, what else could it be?

It could be anything. You have to have the ECU scanned for codes to be able to start troubleshooting. Go to a dealer and it'll run you $60-80. Go to AutoZone and it's free. Get the codes and post them here as a reply and we can take it from there.

If your dipstick reads dry, do NOT run the engine or drive it until you find the leak-there is no reasonable explaination for that condition, it is leaking somehow, period. If you insist on driving it, it will damage or destroy the engine in a very short time-get it checked out (have it towed), it is going to be a very expensive problem if you let it go.
I had the same problem on my 2000 beetle and I had to change the water pump . Once you change the water pump you have to change the timing belt because the water pump is run by the timing belt .
you could know if it is the water pump by checking the hose that comes from the radiator to the enging to se if there is water running to the engine .
Yes you can add oil as you go. this will be fine. Just dont make a habit of it as you can never tell where your oil level is without looking at the dipstick.
have you done an oil change lately? If so did you doit yourself or was it done by a shop? I would check to see that the corret oil has been used fior your vehicle, I would also double check that the correct oil filter has been used. also on the open end of the oil filter that attaches to the car is a rubber " O " ring, I would remove the filter that is on there now and check to see that the O-ring from the old filter was not left behind.
all turbo engines have a oil line to the turbo. If it is not getting oil the turbo will burn up and have to be replaced. Change your oil and filter to start with.
