Question about 1988 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

88 ford mustang ignition

I have an 88 ford originally owned and it has only 78,000 miles on it.  My grandfather owned this car and when he died he deeded it to me.  I noticed about a week ago that the underside of the steering column was getting warm and then yesterday there was smoke comming out of the column where the turn signal switch is.  I was driving it to my mechanic to have it checked out and all of a sudden the car shut off.  Lost the radio.  AC still worked though.  I turned the key to the off position and the battery and all the other gages came up fine.  Showed i had battery power etc.  When i turn the key the battery meter goes to beyond red side and i have nothing. headlights are bright and everything works when the key is in so i am assuming it is the ignition switch.
I was told that there was a recall of the ignition switches on this car and called FORD but they say that it was recalled but it was already replaced according to their "database".  it would seem to me that if it was replaced then it wouldn't be smoking and overheating again but that is just a nonprofessional opinion.
Can you help.  I just dumped 500 dollars into this car for a new rack and pinion and a power steering pump after it started leaking on me.  The car was sitting for about 4 months.  I did an oil change while having this done and drove it literally for a week and now this.  Thank you.

Yes the ignition switch in these years of Fords come apart and cause this problem, the switch is very inexpensive and easy to replace, it is located at the bottom top of steering column, you will need to remove the 2 bolts and drop the column down to replace the switch. There was a recall on these switches, I think it covered all 88 models, call Ford with your VIN #

Dies after running about 2 minutes

It's got all the symptoms of a leak in the fuel line. You may want to start backward at the tank and work your way all the way to the carb to find it but it would be surprising if it was something else. All the best.
