2002 Kia Sportage. Check engine light with flashing hold came on, but no problem mechanically ... like acceleration ... as many describe. Turned car off, then on. As another poster describes, flashing hold comes on right away. But delay before check engine comes back on. ???

Hey Ursula,
This is a serious situation.. The fan is usually held on by bolts, that are screwed into a hub that is pressed on a shaft with a pulley that is turned by a belt. Most engines have the fan on the shaft that is turned by the belt (pulley) and that turns the water pump.. if the water pump shaft broke, this would have caused ALL the symptoms that you have described. This is not a hard or difficult repair job - IF you have the tools and some experience doing this sort of thing.. If not, ask some of the people that work at O'Reillys, Auto Zone or Advance Auto for their recommendations of a good mechanic (one that GUARANTEES their work!!) Good luck!
Have the same problem in our 2002 Spectra. The bad news we received was that in 2002 Kia put some not so good engine blocks in that allowed the crank keeper key to "hog-out" it's slot. This allows the crank to shift a little in timing, which makes cam sensor error and make check engine light come on. Even with a new sensor, it will happen. Our mechanic's best advise was to drive it, local only, until it finally gives way, then find used engine, either newer or older. The only year it would appear to affect is 2002. If your mechanic tears the engine down as though changing timing belt, he or she should be able to see if this is the case.
You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem. Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ? It could be a coil, spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, or a list of other things.
the two light are related, the very 1st thing you need to do here is find out what trouble code was stored when the check engine and hold light came on, have the system tested, this will lead you to the problem and the repair in minimun time with minimum expense.
The sensor is on the passenger side under the hood, it tells the PCM to ignore misfire signals from the engine when on rough roads, so yes it is safe to drive.
