Question about 1996 Chevrolet Corvette

OPTISPARK RELIABILITY I have heard that the Optispark used on this engine is no reliable, is this the case or just a car rumor? What goes wrong? how will I know it has a problem? a miss, no start, what??

It is reliable.what happens usually is the water pump goes bad and moisture gets in the module causing it to fail which is why it is recommended most times to replace both at same time. other than that no real issues

97 pontiac firebird 5.7L HAS NO spark from optispark but has spark from coil


This engine uses a special flat cap and a standard rotor, right ? The spark comes into the cap and thru the rotor, then to the spark plugs.
Have you replaced the rotor ?
The spark can jump thru the rotor and ground thru the dist. shaft.
Depending on where you are testing for spark, the coil could also be weak and not pushing the spark to the plugs.

R&r 5.7 distripter in 1996 camaro


Replacing the Optispark Distributor is a real pain in this year and the LT1 engine.
Here are the steps
Remove accessory drive belt
Remove air intake hose to engine
Remove Radiator fans (unplug wiring harness first)
Drain the cooling system
Remove water pump (unplug water temp sensor first, tie hoses back out the way)
Remove Crankshaft balancer (you can get around the hub).
Remove Optispark cap and the rotor, the remove the bolts that hold the distributor to the block

Reverse to assemble.

I think my optispark is going out but not for sure. The car will start up but will not allow WOT it will cut out or die then is hard to start back. The service engine light will stay on until it sets for...


That rotten egg smell is unburnt fuel in the exhaust. I am no expert in ignition systems but i have heard that optispark systems aren't very hardy. Try replacing the coils, wires, and plugs. If that doesn't work its time for a new distributor.

My 1992 corvette will not idle above .5 rpm wants to die.


Sounds to me you should do some checking and diagnosis first. Start with simple stuff like checking the spark plugs to see if they are fouled or if you have a damaged plug wire or even a loose or unhooked plug wire or plug. Then check all your vacuum hoses to see if there are any that are damaged, dry rotted or not functioning. Then check O2 sensors, idle control valves etc...

Finally if you've checked all that, then I'd opt for a new optispark (the term used for the distributor on these engines), and that's quite a labor intensive job.... and a new optispark is rather expensive at around 300-500 US dollars.

That is usually a worst case scenario. Most of them just need to be flushed from the engine side. Unless it is leaking into the passenger side of the car, you probably only need to run a garden hose thru the inlet and outlet pipes to the core on the engine side of the firewall. Then you must bleed the air out of the system with the bleed valve located near the water pump/Optispark as you refill with green standard antifreeze. Try to choose one without silicone and absolutely under NO circumstances use the manual recommended Dex-Cool.

there maybe a sticker in the engine compartment that shows the vacume line routing or you can go to a dealer and they can print one for you.

Car stops while driving


Your car has a bad optispark. You'll need to replace the unit. My 93 did the exact samer thing. It ran like a champ when it was cold, but the second it warmed up it died. THe one thing you can try is to let it just run, this will build up heat in the optispark unit and help to dry up the moisture that has built up inside it. It may help for the short term, however the problem is that by the time this actually starts happening the unit is already finished. THe other thing I noticed with mine was it was especially bad after a rain fall.....Hope this helps.

Need to know how to tell diff between optispark I and II


on opti spark the dustributor is instalee in front of the engine at crankshaft pulley.this system have plug wires problem with arcing.if your distributor is on intake you dont have optispark.
