Speedometer haywire My speedometer seems like it is sticking. When at idle it shows that I am going 70 miles per hour. It slowly increases until it shows 110 miles per hour at idle. Then as the day goes on it slowly decreases at idle until it gets back to zero (at idle) Its ok for about half a day and then it starts all over again.

I have a 2004 Cavalier. The speedometer started malfunctioning about 6 months ago. I have an extended warranty..but guess what?...it doesn't cover gauges! I have been to other websites and have seen other people with the same problem....LOTS of them. I was wondering if anyone knew of a recall for this? Seems like it should definitely be recalled. I was quoted over $600 to fix it! Thats crazy.

You can get a new cluster at a wreckers fairly reasonable and they are very easy to change in these cars. In my location I sell for $80.00 and will install for $80.00 more.
If they don't work the wrecker will usually let you return but they work 95% ofthe time.

Speedometer

I take it that you only have 1 speedometer and that reads miles per hour or car speed . The left speedo? is in reality a tachometer and reads the engine revolutions per minute. When the engine is cold (before it reaches operating temperature) the CPU will keep the rpm's above 1000 (1 x1000) and when that temperature is reached the idle speed is reduced to normal operating rpm's. So yes it is normal. All you need to do is know the difference and the meaning of all the gauges.

Speedometer is 5 mph off.

Most speedometers are off by a few miles per hour even when new, this is normal
but yours could be caused by putting different size tires on the car check the owners manual for correct size tires
